Per Elvis e il gruppo, questa è stata una serata memorabile.

Elvis conclude il suo impegno di questo ingaggio e per il suo show finale, arriva sul palco, a cavalluccio di Lamar con il peluche di una scimmia, appeso sul collo.

Poi scherza con il pubblico e, mentre canta What Now My Love, si stende su un letto (portato sul palco da Sonny). Fa anche sapere che non è stato trattato bene dall’hotel.

Alla fine dello spettacolo cerca di rimediare a tutto questo dicendo: “So che abbiamo giocato come i bambini, ci siamo divertiti e cose così, ma sappiate che amiamo veramente cantare, fare musica e intrattenere un pubblico. Fino a quando potrò farlo, sarò una persona felice.”

Il colonnello però non si è calmato ed entra nel camerino di Elvis urlando, deciso a dare ad Elvis un raddrizzata sul suo comportamento che definisce “non professionale” verso gente che li paga e che, nel corso degli anni, li ha sempre trattati bene. Nel corso della lite, sembra che tutti i rancori sopiti nel corso degli anni stiano ora esplodendo.

Parkee ed Elvis urlano davanti i membri dell’entourage sotto shock. La lite termina a tarda notte, nella suite con Elvis che licenzia il Colonnello e quest’ultimo che sbraita di essere lui quello che lascia Elvis, ma prima deve essergli saldato tutto quello che gli spetta. Poi il Colonnello si ritira nella sua suite e prepara la fattura.

Per questo ingaggio di 4 settimane, Elvis riceve in totale $ 610.000, di cui $ 168.000 vanno in spese. Al netto di quest’ultime Elvis e il Colonnello si dividono $ 438.000, di cui 2 terzi e 1 terzo rispettivamente

Nelle prossime due settimane e mezzo, Elvis e il Colonnello si accusano e si mandano sfrecciatine reciproche, tramite intermediari, dove, da una parte c’è Elvis che pensa a chi rivolgersi per fargli da manager e Vernon invece, estremamente preoccupato su come trovare i soldi per pagare quanto devono al Colonnello, sulla base della fattura dettagliata che quest’ultimo ha preparato. Dal canto suo, il Colonnello continua il suo lavoro, come manager di Elvis.

Nel frattempo Elvis è coinvolto da un quartetto gospel, di cui fa parte Donnie Sumner (nipote di JD Sumner), che ha appena lasciato gli Stamps e l’ex degli Imperial, Sherill Nielsen. L’idea originale è di presentarli a Tom Jones, che in questo momento, sta avendo delle difficoltà con il suo gruppo di coristi. Con Tom Jones la cosa non va a buon fine, ma poiché gli piace molto come cantano questi ragazzi, Elvis decide di assumerli come suo gruppo personale, sempre a disposizione, dietro compenso di $ 100.000 all’anno.

Prendendo spunto dal Journal New Age Voice, un giornale spirituale che gli ha portato Larry Geller, Elvis chiama il suo nuovo gruppo Voice e il gruppo rimane a Las Vegas tutta la settimana, per cantare con lui

Una rissa fuori dalla suite di Elvis all’Hilton Hotel, mette sotto accusa che Red West e altri due membri dell’entourage di Elvis hanno aggredito e picchiato Kajio Peter Pajarinen, uno degli ospiti di Elvis.

A questo proposito, il 29 Marzo 1975, viene aperta una causa legale contro Elvis, Red e un’altra guardia del corpo non menzionata, causa che, alla morte di Elvis, ancora non è chiusa e alla fine il caso viene chiuso.

Elvis e Linda presenziano ad una performance di Tom Jones, al Caesar’s Palace ed Elvis fa una breve apparizione sul palco per un saluto al pubblico.

Elvis è rimasto a Las Vegas, dove passa il tempo cantando con i Voice e esercitandosi a karate con Kang Rhee. Durante una dimostrazione di karate, spaccando un mobile Elvis si rompe un dito della mano sinistra

Elvis fa chiamare il Colonnello da Sonny West. Sonny non rimane ad ascoltare la telefonata, ma non ha importanza, perché sembra che il problema sia stato risolto. Subito dopo Elvis parte per Palm Springs

La Palm Springs Music consegna un pianoforte Sterling Clark del valore di $ 1.695, con rifiniture in ebano pregiato e argento, nella casa di Elvis a Chino Canyon

La RCA vuole che Elvis completi almeno 4 tracce vocali che Felton Jarvis ha già registrato. Così, con l’approvazione del Colonnello viene inviato a Palm Spring un impianto di registrazione mobile. Tuttavia Elvis è impegnato con il suono nuovo gruppo Voice. Dopo aver passato molto tempo con i Voice, per le loro demo, finalmente alle 3 del mattino, Elvis completa la sovra incisione di Sweet Angeline

Elvis continua le registrazioni dalle 19.00 fino alle 3.15 del mattino e completa altre due canzoni “Are You Sincere” che era già stata registrata, all’inizio dell’estate, a Los Angeles e la canzone di Donnie Sumner “I Miss You”. Questo permette alla RCA di avere materiale a sufficienza per farne un album. Questa registrazione vede Charlie Hodge alla chitarra acustica, Donnie Sumner al piano e Tommy Hensley al basso, insieme a James Burton presente per sovra incidere sulle tracce vocali pre registrate, che fa da chitarra leader

Elvis vola a Los Angeles. Rimane in casa e viene visitato da molti dei suoi dottori.

Ottobre 1973

Elvis va a Los Angeles, e alla County Superior Courthouse in Santa Monica, viene finalizzato il divorzio ufficiale tra lui e Priscilla.

La custodia di Lisa Marie è in affido condiviso ed Elvis paga a Priscilla $725.000 in contanti, oltre a $ 6.000 al mese per 10 anni, più $ 4.000 al mese come sostegno per la figlia, più il 5% della nuova società di pubblicazione e anche metà del valore di vendita della casa di Hillcrest.

Dopo aver ascoltato la sentenza ufficiata in soli brevi 20 minuti, Elvis e Priscilla escono camminando mano nella mano e rimarranno sempre grandi amici.

Poco prima di partire in aereo per Memphis insieme a Linda, Elvis ha dei problemi di respirazione

Elvis e Linda arrivano a Graceland, dove Linda chiama il Dr. Nichopoulos. Visto che ieri Elvis aveva avuto difficoltà respiratorie, il Dr. Nichopoulos organizza affinchè la sua infermiera, Tish Henley, si rechi a casa di Elvis, per prendersi cura di lui.

Elvis si è ripreso e sentendosi molto meglio va a vedere uno spettacolo al Memphian.

15-10-1973

I persistenti problemi respiratori di Elvis, costringono il Dr. Nichopoulos a farlo ricoverare al Baptist Memorial Hospital di Memphis.

Qui Elvis si sottopone a numerosi esami per determinate la causa delle sue condizioni. Immediatamente viene riscontrato un’insufficienza cardiaca congenita.

Il team medico radunato dal Dr. Nichopoulos rimane perplesso di fronte alla affermazioni del Dr. Nick, che sostiene che tutto questo abbia a che fare un trattamento giornaliero di agopuntura che Elvis ha fatto in California.

Forse il problema respiratorio è provocato dal Demerol introdotto nelle iniezioni, che provoca degli effetti collaterali. Gli viene anche riscontrato il colon ingrossato e l’epatite.  Elvis è costretto a restare in ospedale per 2 settimane e Linda rimane con lui.

Elvis è sempre ricoverato all’ospedale di Memphis, mentre il suo singolo "Raised On Rock" è al 41° posto della classifica in U.S.

Elvis viene dimesso dal Baptist Memorial Hospital. Un giorno di questa settimana, Elvis e Linda vanno alla casa dei genitori di Sam Thompson. Passano la serata in relax e suonano brani blues e altre vecchie canzoni che amano, tipo I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry e Spanish Eyes. Elvis e Linda, insieme, fanno anche un duetto che viene registrato da Sam Thompson

Elvis torna agli Stax Studios per una session della durata di una settimana. La session inizia alle 21 e lavorano fino alle 4.30 del mattino, completando i 2 master di I Got A Feeling In My Body e It's Midnight.

Per sopperire ad alcuni problemi tecnici avuti il mese di luglio, la RCA Manda il suo camion e 4 tecnici. Ogni sera si inizia a lavorare alle 21.00 con la TCB Band composta da James Burton, Ronnie Tutt, David Briggs e Norbert Putman. La chitarra ritmica di Memphis Johnny Christopher e lo svedese Per-Eri “Pete” Hallin (oggi pianista dei Voice) in abbinamento con David Briggs alle tastiere. Il numero dei backup singer, inclusi i Voice, arriva ad totale di 11 voci. La session di stasera dura fino alle 4 del mattino. Nonostante siano stati realizzati solo due master, la dedizione di Elvis è completamente diversa da quella di luglio e la canzone di Dennie Linde “I Got A Feeling In My Body” è sicuramente di altro livello

I due sindaci della città e della Contea di Memphis dichiarano l’Elvis Presley Day ed entrambi marciano nella parata organizzata che va dall’Elvis Presley Boulevard a Graceland.

Tra le nuove canzoni che Elvis prova, ci sono “Born To Lose” “The Twelth Of Never” e “I’m Leaving It Up To You” . Alla fine, del nuovo materiale, gli unici brani nuovi che vengono inseriti nello show sono la canzone di Olivia Newton John “Let Me Be There”. “Why Me Lord” di Kris Kristofferson e “Help Me” di Larry Gatlin, brani che Elvis ha ricevuto dai Voice.
