Elvis passa le prime tre sere del nuovo anno al Memphian

Elvis sembra essere con uno spirito positivo, mentre vola da Los Angeles alle Hawaii. Marty Pasetta, il produttore e regista dell’Aloha, che lo aveva precedentemente incontrato in uno spettacolo a Long Beach, racconta che Elvis ha dovuto dimagrire e sia lui che Sonny West hanno perso 25 pounds, sottoponendosi ad una drastica dieta che Elvis ha preso a Las Vegas.

Dopo essere arrivato all’aeroporto Oahu di Honolulu, proveniente da Los Angeles, con un elicottero alle 4 del pomeriggio, Elvis viene portato all’Hilton Hawaiian Village Hotel, dove fa le prime prove con la band e i coristi, che sono già arrivati

E’ arrivata anche l’orchestra ed continuano le prove per l’Aloha From Hawaii, dove, come incoraggiamento, è presente anche Felton Jarvis, nonostante sia ancora in convalescenza, a seguito del trapianto di rene subito in Ottobre, intervento che fu “organizzato” e pagato interamente da Elvis

Elvis sta programmando di indossare un American-Eagle jumpsuit e un mantello, disegnato espressamente per lui da Bill Belew.
Sia la sera prima che quella antecedente, Elvis aveva donato la relativa cintura, incastonata di rubini alla moglie del suo amico Jack Lord, stella del popolare show televisivo Hawaii FIVE-O. Joe Esposito è costretto a fare una chiamata urgente a Bill Belew affinchè ne rifaccia un'altra identica per lo show. La nuova cintura viene portata personalmente dall’assistente di Belew, in tempo per lo spettacolo.

Sullo sfondo nero, per l’intera larghezza del palcoscenico, ci sono giganti insegne luminose che tracciavano la parola Elvis, in vari caratteri idiomatici, mentre altre si accendono e spengono, tratteggiando la sagoma di una chitarra.
Non c’è un biglietto d’ingresso a pagamento, ma con offerta libera, con l’obiettivo di raggiungere $25.000 in favore del Kiu Lee Cancer Fund. Elvis offre $1.000

Elvis fa nuovamente storia come il primo artista che appare dal vivo, via satellite e lo show sarà visto da oltre un miliardo di persone, in oltre 40 paesi del mondo.
Appena 30 minuti dopo mezzanotte, lo show viene mandato in onda, in buona parte dei paesi orientali, inclusi Corea, Giappone e Hong Kong, dove Elvis è conosciuto come “King Cat”.
Il Giappone registra il più alto indice di ascolto, raggiungendo il 37,8% di share, in un mercato che è altamente competitivo. Per 28 paesi europei lo show va in onda nelle ore successive, in base alla zona, in una versione registrata.
L’incasso dello spettacolo che andrà in favore del Kui Lee Cancer Fund,raggiunge un totale che è 3 volte superiore a quello richiesto: totali $75000 anziché i previsti $25000.
Alla fine dello spettacolo, Elvis getta al pubblico la cintura (che, dopo aver regalato l’originale a Mrs Lord, gli era appena stata sostituita) e il mantello, che viene preso dal giornalista sportivo Bruce Spriks. Il mantello ora è a Graceland. Secondo il Los Angeles Times questo è il “momento clou” della serata.
La RCA registra il concerto e, per poterlo distribuire al mondo nell’arco un mese, programma di metterlo in un nuovo formato quadrifonico, che recentemente hanno 
sviluppato

Non appena il pubblico lascia l’auditorium ed la trasmissione viene completata, Elvis esegue “Early Morning Rain” e altre 4 canzoni, dal film Blue Hawaii, che saranno aggiunte alla versione americana dello show, la cui messa in onda è prevista per Aprile.
Alle 3 del mattino di domenica, il Colonnello scrive ad Elvis una lettera insolitamente piena di emozione, in cui afferma che loro non hanno alcun bisogno di abbracciarsi, perché bastava che si guardassero dal palcoscenico e dalla sala per dire di sapere i reciproci sentimenti e aggiunge “Quando io faccio la mia parte, so che anche tu fai sempre la tua, a modo tuo e con la tua sensibilità su come attuarla al meglio, dando il massimo. Ecco perché io e te non litigheremo mai, se, ogni volta, daremo il massimo nel nostro lavoro”. Parker conclude la lettera con una serie di elogi, sempre molto rari durante il loro rapporto, tra cui dice: “Tu soprattutto, con il tuo talento, hai reso possibile tutto. Se non ci fosse stata la tua dedizione, tutto questo non sarebbe potuto succedere”.

Elvis continua a stare male e i medici suggeriscono di non fare concerti questa sera. Nonostante questo Elvis fa il Dinner show, ma è costretto a cancellare lo show di mezzanotte.

Il colonnello scrive ad Elvis che è in corso la costituzione di una nuova società musicale e, di conseguenza, deve garantirgli di evitare qualsiasi impegno, fino a che tutto non sia concluso. “Questo è per proteggerti” scrive il colonnello “dal ritrovarti coinvolto a dover registrare troppo materiale nel corso dell’anno, rischiando di ricevere solo tante pacche sulle schiena, anziché assegni per i diritti, visto quanto sei grande,……. Adesso che sei al corrente della situazione e hai tutte le informazioni necessarie, apprezzerò se tu sarai così bravo, da usare i tuoi modi intelligenti e dire, a chiunque ti parli di musica o registrazioni future, che per un periodo hai deciso di non registrare. Dal, momento che il Colonnello sta negoziando per un nuovo affare sulla musica, non c’è alcuna necessità di discuterne con altri. Questo ti metterà in una posizione intelligente e nessuno potrà incantarti buttandoti le braccia al collo, per dirti quanto sei grande”

Anche stasera, contrariamente a quanto vorrebbero i medici, Elvis ha deciso che cercherà di fare il meglio che può. Non vuole deludere coloro che sono venuti a vederlo. Però anche questa sera non ci sarà lo spettacolo di mezzanotte. Grazie”

Pertanto lo show programmato per mezzanote, viene annullato

Poco dopo il Dinner Show viene dato l’annuncio che lo spettacolo di mezzanotte è stato cancellato. Barron Hilton informa il Colonnello che Elvis sarà pagato anche alcuni show non sono stati fatti e il Colonnello risponde che intende rimediare, facendogli fare degli show aggiuntivi, in altra occasione. “Questa lettera” scrive il Colonnello “non ha lo scopo di contrastare la sua generosità e comprensione, ma vuole evidenziare che abbiamo lo stesso spirito in merito a queste cose. Mai intenderemo o abbiamo inteso di voler scansare i nostri obblighi”

Nonostante sia ormai chiaro a tutti che i quattro uomini di ieri sera, altro non erano che dei fans sovreccitatiti, Elvis rimane convinto che ci fosse qualcosa in più e che fossero stati mandati dal compagno di Priscilla, Mike Stone.

Viste le preoccupazioni del Colonnello e, in particolare di quelle di Vernon Presley, l’avvocato Ed Hookstratten inizia ad indagare per capire chi stia continuamente fornendo Elvis. Mettendo John O’Grady come investigatore, per alcune settimane, Hookstratten scopre che i principali fornitori sono tre medici e un dentista. Ci sono vari tentativi di minacce a questi dottori e bloccare le forniture, ma data assenza di collaborazione da parte della vittima principale, ogni tentativo si rivela inutile

Sembra sia oggi il giorno in cui Elvis incontra il Governatore Jimmy Carter, futuro Presidente del U.S.A. e sua moglie, nel backstage

La RCA scrive ad Elvis chiedendogli di fissare una data per iniziare una nuova session di registrazione, dando evidenza di cosa si aspetta: un nuovo album, due nuovi singoli e un nuovo album di canzoni religiose.
“Al fine di avere il materiale disponibile” scrive perentorio George Parkill “abbiamo fissato una session di registrazione per metà luglio”. La lettera continua dando ad Elvis la scelta del luogo della session, ma deve assolutamente essere fatta.

Completato il tour, Elvis torna a Memphis, dove rimarrà in casa per la maggior parte del tempo e uscendo solo per andare al cinema

Il nuovo avvocato di Priscilla presenta le carte in tribunale, per far riaprire la causa di divorzio, al fine di rivedere le condizioni originariamente stabilite.
Nel contempo, Elvis compra una casa da $ 37.500 a Memphis in Favel Drive, per Sam Thompson, fratello di Linda

Sapendo che Elvis non ha tanta voglia di lasciare Memphis, anche perché è in arrivo sua figlia Lisa Marie, per il periodo estivo, Marthy Lacker suggerisce di registrare negli Stax Studios, che sono a MacLemore Avenue, a pochi minuti da Graceland e non lontana dalla vecchia chiesa Assembly of God Church, dove una volta, negli anni '50, Elvis andò con Dixie. 

Marthy Lacker che già fu determinante per la scelta degli American Studio, ora ha iniziato a lavorare per la Stax, che è diventata l'etichetta più importante di r&b di Memphis. 

Forse, prendendo spunto da queste coincidenze, Felton Jarvis, il produttore di Elvis, contatta gli stessi musicisti che lavorarono con Elvis nella session agli American Studios, nel 1969 e li unisce a James Burton e Ronnie Tutt.
Per Felton Jarvis, questa è una session importante e, se vuole mantenere il suo lavoro, deve assolutamente essere molto produttiva.
Sfortunatamente, la prima sera di session, Elvis non si presenta e la seconda sera arriva molto tardi, accompagnato da Linda Thompson e Lisa Marie, indossando un vestito bianco, mantello nero e un cappello indossato alla Borsalino

Elvis arriva alla Stax Recording Studio di Memphis, nel bel mezzo della notte, in condizioni non proprio buone.
Molti dei musicisti che sono in studio non hanno mai visto Elvis prima e rimangono sconvolti nel vedere il suo modo di comportarsi e il suo aspetto. "Era la prima volta che lo vedevo grasso" dice Jerry Carrigan, il batterista di Nashville "Parlava in modo legato. E’ stata una cosa orribile".
Quando alle 3 del mattino la session termina, sono stati completati tre master interi, pur se la session è intercalata da una dimostrazione di karate con Kang Rhee

Le canzoni registrate oggi sono “If You Don't Come Back”, “Three Corn Patches” e “Take Good Care Of Her”.

Elvis è di nuovo alla Stax Recording Studio di Memphis, per una nuova session di registrazione che risulterà ben poco scrupolosa, session che inizia alle 23.00 e termina alle 3.00 del mattino Elvis registra altre tre canzoni, tra cui una che Felton Jarvis ha preso a Nashville dal suo amico, Bob Beckam, “I’ve Got A Thingh About You, Baby” una composizione di Tony Joe White

Le canzoni registrate stasera sono “Find Out What's Happening” “I've Got A Thing About You Baby” e “Just A Little Bit”.

Questa è un’altra serata passata a registrare alla Stax Recording Studio, Memphis, in modo discontinuo, perchè dalle 23. alle 3.30 vengono registrate solo due canzoni ed esattamente “Raised On Rock” di Mark James e un’altra canzone di Tony Joe White “For Ol’ Times Shake”. Entrambe formeranno il prossimo singolo

Elvis Presley torna allo studio Stax di Memphis, ma la serata inizia male. Non è per nulla contento del suono delle canzoni registrate negli ultimi giorni e se ne va quando viene a sapere che il suo microfono personale è stato rubato dallo studio.
Viene incisa solamente una canzone:

Nonostante si sia arrivati solo a metà del materiale richiesto dalla RCA, , invece di andare in studio, Elvis va al cinema Crosstown

Elvis parte da Memphis in aereo e va a Los Angeles

Alle 21.00, Elvis inizia tre giorni di prove con la band per l’ingaggio di Las Vegas, nello Studio
della RCA, sul Sunset Bvd.
Vengono provate alcune canzoni del “vecchio” repertorio di Elvis come “She’s Not You” “I Feel So Bad” “A Mess of Blues”, ma alla fine diventano parte regolare dello show solo “Trouble” e il medley di rock ‘n roll che Elvis ha già fatto in vari concerti.
Provano anche altre due canzoni e cioè “The Twelfth Of Never” e “Are You Sincere” (Elvis registrerà quest’ultima a Nashville nel prossimo mese di settembre), ma alla fine anche queste non vengono inserite nello show di Las Vegas e dopo l’Opening Night, viene tolta dallo show anche “Raised On Rock”.
Di fatto l’unica canzone nuova che viene inserita nella scaletta è “My Boy” una cover della versione fatta dall’attore Richard Harris, in occasione del suo divorzio del 1971

Tra il pubblico presente, tra le altre celebrità, ci sono anche Petula Clark (che Elvis presenterà dopo le presentazioni della band), Liza Minelli e John Rivers. Su questo show, l’Hollywood Reports offre ai suoi lettori una recensione a dir poco disarmante e infatti scrive “Elvis era indifferente, non coinvolto, poco accattivante. La leggenda vivente è grasso e scimmiottava se stesso in modo eccessivo.  La sua personalità si è persa in una performance tra le più impreparate, insicure e scoraggianti di tutta la sua carriera a Las Vegas.  E’ una tragedia scoraggiante e deprimente vedere Elvis sceso ad un simile livello.

            Per Elvis e il gruppo, questa è stata una serata memorabile.
            Elvis conclude il suo impegno di questo ingaggio e per il suo show finale, arriva sul palco, a cavalluccio di Lamar con il peluche di una scimmia, appeso sul collo.
            Poi scherza con il pubblico e, mentre canta What Now My Love, si stende su un letto (portato sul palco da Sonny). Fa anche sapere che non è stato trattato bene dall’hotel.
            Alla fine dello spettacolo cerca di rimediare a tutto questo dicendo: “So che abbiamo giocato come i bambini, ci siamo divertiti e cose così, ma sappiate che amiamo veramente cantare, fare musica e intrattenere un pubblico. Fino a quando potrò farlo, sarò una persona felice.”
            Il colonnello però non si è calmato ed entra nel camerino di Elvis urlando, deciso a dare ad Elvis un raddrizzata sul suo comportamento che definisce “non professionale” verso gente che li paga e che, nel corso degli anni, li ha sempre trattati bene. Nel corso della lite, sembra che tutti i rancori sopiti nel corso degli anni stiano ora esplodendo.
            Parkee ed Elvis urlano davanti i membri dell’entourage sotto shock. La lite termina a tarda notte, nella suite con Elvis che licenzia il Colonnello e quest’ultimo che sbraita di essere lui quello che lascia Elvis, ma prima deve essergli saldato tutto quello che gli spetta. Poi il Colonnello si ritira nella sua suite e prepara la fattura.
            Per questo ingaggio di 4 settimane, Elvis riceve in totale $ 610.000, di cui $ 168.000 vanno in spese. Al netto di quest’ultime Elvis e il Colonnello si dividono $ 438.000, di cui 2 terzi e 1 terzo rispettivamente





            04-09-1973

            Nelle prossime due settimane e mezzo, Elvis e il Colonnello si accusano e si mandano sfrecciatine reciproche, tramite intermediari, dove, da una parte c’è Elvis che pensa a chi rivolgersi per fargli da manager e Vernon invece, estremamente preoccupato su come trovare i soldi per pagare quanto devono al Colonnello, sulla base della fattura dettagliata che quest’ultimo ha preparato. Dal canto suo, il Colonnello continua il suo lavoro, come manager di Elvis.
            Nel frattempo Elvis è coinvolto da un quartetto gospel, di cui fa parte Donnie Sumner (nipote di JD Sumner), che ha appena lasciato gli Stamps e l’ex degli Imperial, Sherill Nielsen. L’idea originale è di presentarli a Tom Jones, che in questo momento, sta avendo delle difficoltà con il suo gruppo di coristi. Con Tom Jones la cosa non va a buon fine, ma poiché gli piace molto come cantano questi ragazzi, Elvis decide di assumerli come suo gruppo personale, sempre a disposizione, dietro compenso di $ 100.000 all’anno.
            Prendendo spunto dal Journal New Age Voice, un giornale spirituale che gli ha portato Larry Geller, Elvis chiama il suo nuovo gruppo Voice e il gruppo rimane a Las Vegas tutta la settimana, per cantare con lui 


            07-09-1973
            Una rissa fuori dalla suite di Elvis all’Hilton Hotel, mette sotto accusa che Red West e altri due membri dell’entourage di Elvis hanno aggredito e picchiato Kajio Peter Pajarinen, uno degli ospiti di Elvis.
            A questo proposito, il 29 Marzo 1975, viene aperta una causa legale contro Elvis, Red e un’altra guardia del corpo non menzionata, causa che, alla morte di Elvis, ancora non è chiusa e alla fine il caso viene chiuso. 


            08-09-1973
            Elvis e Linda presenziano ad una performance di Tom Jones, al Caesar’s Palace ed Elvis fa una breve apparizione sul palco per un saluto al pubblico.



            11-09-1973
            Elvis è rimasto a Las Vegas, dove passa il tempo cantando con i Voice e esercitandosi a karate con Kang Rhee. Durante una dimostrazione di karate, spaccando un mobile Elvis si rompe un dito della mano sinistra

            Elvis fa chiamare il Colonnello da Sonny West. Sonny non rimane ad ascoltare la telefonata, ma non ha importanza, perché sembra che il problema sia stato risolto. Subito dopo Elvis parte per Palm Springs

            La Palm Springs Music consegna un pianoforte Sterling Clark del valore di $ 1.695, con rifiniture in ebano pregiato e argento, nella casa di Elvis a Chino Canyon

            Elvis fa una visita da un ofmatologo di Palm Springs

            Lisa Marie vola a Palm Springs per raggiungere Elvis e poi va dal dentista Dr. Max Shapiro con suo padre

            La RCA vuole che Elvis completi almeno 4 tracce vocali che Felton Jarvis ha già registrato. Così, con l’approvazione del Colonnello viene inviato a Palm Spring un impianto di registrazione mobile. Tuttavia Elvis è impegnato con il suono nuovo gruppo Voice. Dopo aver passato molto tempo con i Voice, per le loro demo, finalmente alle 3 del mattino, Elvis completa la sovraincisione di Sweet Angeline

            Elvis continua le registrazioni dalle 19.00 fino alle 3.15 del mattino e completa altre due canzoni “Are You Sincere” che era già stata registrata, all’inizio dell’estate, a Los Angeles e la canzone di Donnie Sumner “I Miss You”. Questo permette alla RCA di avere materiale a sufficienza per farne un album. Questa registrazione vede Charlie Hodge alla chitarra acustica, Donnie Sumner al piano e Tommy Hensley al basso, insieme a James Burton presente per sovra incidere sulle tracce vocali pre registrate, che fa da chitarra leader

            Elvis vola a Los Angeles. Rimane in casa e viene visitato da molti dei suoi dottori

            Elvis va a Los Angeles, e alla County Superior Courthouse in Santa Monica, viene finalizzato il divorzio ufficiale tra lui e Priscilla.
            La custodia di Lisa Marie è in affido condiviso ed Elvis paga a Priscilla $725.000 in contanti, oltre a $ 6.000 al mese per 10 anni, più $ 4.000 al mese come sostegno per la figlia, più il 5% della nuova società di pubblicazione e anche metà del valore di vendita della casa di Hillcrest.
            Dopo aver ascoltato la sentenza ufficiata in soli brevi 20 minuti, Elvis e Priscilla escono camminando mano nella mano e rimarranno sempre grandi amici

            Poco prima di partire in aereo per Memphis insieme a Linda, Elvis ha dei problemi di respirazione

            Elvis e Linda arrivano a Graceland, dove Linda chiama il Dr. Nichopoulos. Visto che ieri Elvis aveva avuto difficoltà respiratorie, il Dr. Nichopoulos organizza affinchè la sua infermiera, Tish Henley, si rechi a casa di Elvis, per prendersi cura di lui.

            Elvis si è ripreso e sentendosi molto meglio va a vedere uno spettacolo al Memphian

            I persistenti problemi respiratori di Elvis, costringono il Dr. Nichopoulos a farlo ricoverare al Baptist Memorial Hospital di Memphis.
            Qui Elvis si sottopone a numerosi esami per determinate la causa delle sue condizioni. Immediatamente viene riscontrato un’insufficienza cardiaca congenita.
            Il team medico radunato dal Dr. Nichopoulos rimane perplesso di fronte alla affermazioni del Dr. Nick, che sostiene che tutto questo abbia a che fare un trattamento giornaliero di agopuntura che Elvis ha fatto in California.
            Forse il problema respiratorio è provocato dal Demerol introdotto nelle iniezioni, che provoca degli effetti collaterali. Gli viene anche riscontrato il colon ingrossato e l’epatite.  Elvis è costretto a restare in ospedale per 2 settimane e Linda rimane con lui.

            Elvis è sempre ricoverato all’ospedale di Memphis, mentre il suo singolo "Raised On Rock" è al 41° posto della classifica in U.S.

            Elvis viene dimesso dal Baptist Memorial Hospital. Un giorno di questa settimana, Elvis e Linda vanno alla casa dei genitori di Sam Thompson. Passano la serata in relax e suonano brani blues e altre vecchie canzoni che amano, tipo I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry e Spanish Eyes. Elvis e Linda, insieme, fanno anche un duetto che viene registrato da Sam Thompson

            Il singolo “Raised On Rock” è al 36° posto della classifica in U.K

            Elvis torna agli Stax Studios per una session della durata di una settimana. La session inizia alle 21 e lavorano fino alle 4.30 del mattino, completando i 2 master di I Got A Feeling In My Body e It's Midnight.
            Per sopperire ad alcuni problemi tecnici avuti il mese di luglio, la RCA Manda il suo camion e 4 tecnici. Ogni sera si inizia a lavorare alle 21.00 con la TCB Band composta da James Burton, Ronnie Tutt, David Briggs e Norbert Putman. La chitarra ritmica di Memphis Johnny Christopher e lo svedese Per-Eri “Pete” Hallin (oggi pianista dei Voice) in abbinamento con David Briggs alle tastiere. Il numero dei backup singer, inclusi i Voice, arriva ad totale di 11 voci. La session di stasera dura fino alle 4 del mattino. Nonostante siano stati realizzati solo due master, la dedizione di Elvis è completamente diversa da quella di luglio e la canzone di Dennie Linde “I Got A Feeling In My Body” è sicuramente di altro livello

            Elvis è sempre allo Stax Sudios di Memphis, dove lavora dalla 21.00 alle 6 del mattino e, oltre che registrare Your Love's Been A Long Time Coming e There's A Honky Tonk Angel registra la versione rock di Promised Land

            Elvis è sempre agli Stax Studio di Memphis e, dopo una session durata fino alle 5 del mattino, registra If That Isn't Love, Spanish Eyes e She Wears My Ring. Tenendo conto anche delle registrazioni degli ultimi due giorni Elvis termina 18 master che Felton Jarvis può presentare alla RCA. In particolare le canzoni I Got A Feeling In My Body, If You Talk In Your Sleep, Loving Arm, Tals About The Good Times e la versione rock di Promised Land riflettono un Elvis più in salute e più felice

            Elvis, in questo periodo, passa la maggior parte delle serate al cinema, ma oggi deve subire un piccolo intervento al piede nell’ambulatorio di un podologo di Memphis, per curare un’unghia incarnata.

            Tra i regali che Elvis fa, oltre alla pelliccia di visone a 3/4 che regala a Linda Thompson, c’è anche un cappotto scamosciato di volpe con collo in pelliccia di volpe, anche questo acquistato al King Furs di Memphis.

            Elvis è a Graceland e riceve una telefonata dal podologo che, un paio di giorni prima, lo ha operato all’unghia.
