Elvis apre questo tour con il Dinner show, con recensioni che lo descrivono più magro e meno chiacchierone. Il mantello è diventato un optional fisso dello show ed Elvis canta molte più ballate, tra cui brani di Marty Robbins quali “You Gave Me A Mountain” “It’ Over” e “It’s Impossible”. Sono tutte canzoni che parlano di un amore perduto e tutte sono contante con un tale sentimento che sembra abbiano un’associazione autobiografiche. Priscilla è a Las Vegas dalla sera dell’apertura, ma non si vede fino alla serata di chiusura. Elvis presenta anche “American Trilogy” una canzone di Mickey Newbury, unita drammaticamente alle patriottiche “Dixie” , “The Battle Hyms Of Republic” e lo spiritual negro “All My Trials” . 

In questo stesso giorno, viene emessa la sentenza definitiva che Elvis non è il padre del bambino di Patricia Parker e la causa viene chiusa.

Il Colonnello, sempre insoddisfatto della gestione da parte del Management III, convince la RCA a creare la sua società di promozione dei tours, la RCA Record Tours, della quale il Colonnello sarà il controller.

Dall’altra parte la società del colonnello All Star Tour, firma ulteriore contratto con la Management III e la RCA Records Tours, per promuovere il 13° tour di Aprile

Viene spedito all’estero il singolo He touched Me/Bosom of Abraham. Questa è un pubblicazione voluta dal Colonnello per Pasqua e i brani vengono estratti dal nuovo album gospel “He Touched Me”, che già da subito supera le 50.000 copie vendute

Viene pubblicato anche LP “Elvis Now” (#43). E’ difficile da stabilire se il titolo dell’album intenda il nuovo tipo di musica che Elvis ama, in quanto l’album include alcuni brani del 1970 e una del 1969, come pure l’ultimo singolo e un guazzabuglio di altre cinque registrazioni. L’album vende oltre 400.000 copie.

MARZO

01-03-1972

In un accordo precedentemente suggerito dalla RCA, che non era andato a buon fine e che in seguito è stato elaborato e concluso con indicazione della data di oggi, il Colonnello Parker fa in modo di vendere il catalogo della musica di Elvis, alla RCA Records. Inizialmente l’idea era stata della RCA grazie a Mel Ilberman, che, con questa mossa, intravede la possibilità di avere il controllo sul materiale di Elvis ed essere in grado di averlo per usi diversi (tra cui la RCA Record Club e il riconfezionamento)  Con questo accordo, naturalmente la RCA ha l’esclusiva su tutto il materiale di Elvis e che, essendo in mano al Colonnello, sin dall’inizio è sempre stato notevolmente bloccato od ostacolalo dalla sua gestione  che diceva cosa pubblicare e cosa non (e anche in che formato).

Con un'unica soluzione di pagamento di 5,4 milioni di dollari, la RCA compra tutti i diritti sui dischi registrali da Elvis prima del 1973 e con valore contrattuale perpetuo.

La somma pagata verrà divisa al 50-50 tra Elvis e il Colonnello. Allo stesso tempo, Elvis entra in un nuovo accordo con il Colonnello, secondo il quale tutte le entrate derivanti dalle registrazioni (in altre parole, non solo quanto concluso dai contratti) da questo momento, verrà diviso al 50-50, mentre la parte riguardante i tours, rimarrà con la divisione ai 2/3-1/3.

Elvis entra in un nuovo contratto con la RCA della validità di sette anni, che stabilisce due albums e quattro singoli all’anno, obbligatori per avere il pagamento annuale, con royalties che devono essere al massimo di $ 500.000, che naturalmente saranno assoggettate alla divisione al 50-50 con il Colonnello.

Nella totalità sembra che sia stato fatto un affare da 10,5 milioni di dollari, dove comunque il Colonnello fa altri speciali trattative (tutte sottoscritte da Elvis) per la promozione di tours e dischi e per fare da “consulente” alla RCA “per lo sviluppo della promozione dei tours e relativa pubblicità.

Dai 10,5 milioni di dollari, il Colonnello si prende 6 milioni di dollari ed Elvis 4,5

Il Colonnello e Freddy Beinstock discutono per aprire la loro società pubblicitaria, alla luce della scelta dei fratelli Aberbach di togliersi dalla Hill & Range, per motivi personali e professionali.

Nel corso del successivo anno e mezzo, vengono applicate diverse varianti, tra cui, ad un certo punto pensano anche di acquistare la Hill & Range.

Elvis torna a Los Angeles, per una session negli studi della RCA di Hollywood, prima del suo tour di Aprile. Pur se il Colonnello non ha ancora concluso la sua trattativa con la MGM, in merito al secondo documentario sui concerti, questo tour verrà comunque ripreso dalle telecamere.

Elvis è alla RCA di Hollywood con la band e, per la prima volta, con JD Sumner e gli Stamps.

Della band sono presenti tutti, tranne Jerry Scheff, che è stato sostituito dal bassista che c’era a Nashville, Ermory Gordy.

La prima notte di session inizia alle 19 e finisce alle prime ore del mattino. L’umore di Elvis è molto simile a quello che aveva durante il suo recente impegno a Las Vegas, in quanto si focalizza su canzoni tendenzialmente tristi, dove si parla di perdite della persona amata e di rimpianti, com’è “Where Do I Go From Here” “For The Good Time” di Kris Kristofferson e la canzone di Red West “Separate Ways”, che potrebbe essere stata scritta per lui.

28-03-1972 

Se pur con notevoli sforzi, Felton Jarvis convince Elvis a registrare un brano rock che ha ricevuto da un suo amico, l’editore di Nashville Bob Beckam. Sia Beckam che Jarvis sono convinti che la canzone “Burning Love” di Tennis Linde, potrebbe diventare un grande successo per Elvis, essendo una canzone che lo collega agli inizi della sua carriera. Nonostante Elvis non sia in uno spirito perfetto, riescono a convincerlo a fare qualcosa di diverso dalle solite tristi ballate, di quest'ultimo periodo.

29-03-1972

Anche questa session inizia con un’altra canzone molto triste quale "Always On My Mind" per poi proseguire con "It's A Matter Of Time". La session si conclude all’una del mattino, con il completamento di sette masters in oltre tre notti di registrazioni.

Il Colonnello comunica all’Hilton di Las Vegas che, per la parte restante dell’anno, Elvis non sarà disponibile, essendo occupato nella realizzazione del documentario, di cui è imminente l’inizio (infatti partirà dopo il tour di aprile). Le riprese del documentario della MGM, che verrà pubblicato come “Elvis On Tour” inizia con la simulazione di una session di registrazione, con canzoni che apparentemente sono già state completate. Il documentario sarà prodotto e diretto dalla squadra di Bob Abel e Pierre Adidge, due cineasti freschi del successo di “Mad Dogs and Englishmen” uno splendido documentario del 1970 su Joe Cocker e le esperienze dei suoi tours

Continuano le riprese concentrate su Elvis che esegue le canzoni che farà in tour. La notte finisce con Elvis, Charlie Hodge, JD Sumner, gli Stampa e James Burton, intorno al piano mentre cantano canzoni gospel. Prima di lasciare lo studio Elvis da un’intervista informale centrata sulle origini del suo amore per la musica gospel e sui suoi concerti. Quando gli viene chiesto come mai c’è questo feeling tra i suoi musicisti del gruppo, Elvis risponde “Probabilmente perché tutti ci divertiamo con questa musica. Facciamo due spettacoli a sera, per settimane, ma non lo facciamo mai diventare obsoleto. Ogni volta è come se fosse la prima volta e questo è uno dei segreti.

Non tanto perché il Colonnello ha fatto capire che per tutto l’anno Elvis potrebbe essere impegnato con il cinema, quanto per un suo esplicito accenno alla possibilità che, entro un anno o due, l’artista potrebbe essere l’attrazione principale del nuovo hotel di Kirk Kerkorian l’MGM Grand, (al momento ancora in costruzione), l’Hilton accetta di pagare Elvis $ 1.300 alla settimana per i prossimi due ingaggi e $ 150.000 per i tre ingaggi successivi.

Inoltre per i prossimi tre anni, l’Hilton pagherà al Colonnello Parker $ 50.000 all’anno, per le sue consulenze

Adesso il gruppo è formato da 70/80 persone (inclusi tecnici, macchinisti, responsabili delle attrezzature, musicisti e concessionari), che si spostano con aerei a noleggio, mentre i montatori e attrezzisti del palco vanno con i camions che trasportano tutto il necessario, fermandosi di città in città, per un tour che durerà 12 giorni.

Il Colonnello, invece, si sposta da solo arrivando prima sul luogo dei concerti.

Elvis si esibisce al Madison Square Garden, NY, NY

Elvis non si è mai esibito prima a New York City, fatto salvo le apparizioni del 1956 e 1957 negli show televisivi dei fratelli Dorsey, Steve Allen ed Ed Sullivan, dove il perbenismo dei bianchi di “elite” di New York non aveva accettato lo stile di Elvis Presley, contestando animosamente le sue performance.

Memore dell’indifferenza, della freddezza e delle critiche manifestate negli anni ’50 dai newyorkesi, Elvis stesso è particolarmente impaurito ad esibirsi nuovamente davanti al pubblico di New York. Dal canto suo, Parker invece pensa che il pubblico di New York sia cresciuto e sia quindi più maturo per apprezzare questo nuovo Elvis che si è dimostrato essere vincente ovunque si sia esibito.

Prendendosi una pausa dalle prove, alle 16.00 di oggi Elvis tiene una conferenza stampa all’Hilton Hotel.

D. Ti amiamo Elvis 

E.P. Grazie cara, anch’io vi amo. Grazie

D. Nel corso di questi anni tutti hanno detto che sei molto umile e timido, che cosa ne pensi?

E.P. Oh, davvero non so cosa li faccia pensare in questo modo, visto che….. questa cintura è d’oro e (risata)… La cintura è un ringraziamento dall’International per il record di performances…..

D. Perché hai aspettato tanto per esibirti a New York?

E.P. Penso….. credo sia stato un problema di non avere un edificio, un posto adeguato. Abbiamo dovuto attendere il nostro turno per la disponibilità dell’edificio. In 15 anni non siamo mai riusciti a trovare un edificio adeguato. No, scherzi a parte, abbiamo dovuto aspettare il nostro turno per essere al Garden. Spero di fare un buon spettacolo per tutti. Mi piace e mi diverto.

D. Perché pensi di essere riuscito a durare più a lungo di qualsiasi altro intrattenitore?

E.P. Perché prendo la Vitamina E (risata). Stavo solo scherzando….. Non so (risata)….. Questo mi imbarazza. Ah, non so cara, io solo…. Semplicemente a me piace il mio lavoro. Mi piace quello che faccio.

D. Mi ricordo l’Ed Sullivan Show

E.P. Si anch’io ….. ecco perché sto seduto

D. E’ abitudine criticarti per i tuoi capelli lunghi e tutte quelle piroette sul palco, che cosa ne pensi?

E.P. Signore, sono stato docile se confrontato a quello che fanno adesso, sta scherzando (risata). Non faccio niente di particolare, semplicemente mi muovo.

D. Mostraci il movimento!

E.P. No (risata), Non posso…. non posso farlo. Mi devo salvaguardare per lo spettacolo.

D. Che cosa ne pensi del modo di esibirsi di oggi e del comportamento sul palco?

E.P. Oh, io… io non so. Non posso criticare nessuno nel campo dell’intrattenimento. Penso ci sia posto per tutti. Odio criticare gli altri artisti.

D. Sei soddisfatto dell’immagine che ti sei creato?

E.P. Beh, l’immagine è una cosa, a la parte umana è un’altra, perciò è molto pesante vivere su un’immagine. La metto in questo modo.

D. Che tipo di pubblico pensi di attirare maggiormente adesso?

E.P. Trovo che il pubblico che abbiamo adesso è misto. Ci sono persone più vecchie, persone più giovani e quelli molto giovani. Tutti i generi di persone, il che è un bene. Ho appena fatto un film dell’ultimo tour che ho fatto, è il primo concerto live che sia stato mai filmato, e quindi è questo il mio prossimo progetto. Ci sono ancora tanti posti dove non ho fatto dei concerti. Tipo, non mi ero mai esibito qui a New York. Non sono neanche mai andato in Gran Bretagna. Mi piacerebbe, sissignore e molto. Mi piacerebbe andare in Europa. Mi piacerebbe andare in Giappone e tanti altri posti. Non sono mai uscito da questo paese, tranne che il servizio militare. Eh si, mi piacerebbe andarci!

D. Elvis, che cosa ti ha spinto a decidere di chiudere con il cinema e ripredere con le apparizioni live?

E.P. Mi mancavano. Mi mancava la vicinanza di un pubblico ….. di un pubblico vivo. Così appena mi sono svincolato dai contratti cinematografici, ho ripreso a fare spettacoli live. 

D. Pensi di farne sempre di più?

E.P. Penso di sì

D. Qual’è la tua opinione sul servizio militare obbligatorio 

E.P. Preferisco tenere per me le mie opinioni personali su queste cose, in quanto io sono in intrattenitore e sinceramente non so.

D. Perché la MGM ha filmato i tuoi concerti prima a Boston per l’Elvis on Tour, quando avrebbero potuto girarlo qui.

E.P. Non so. Questa è una buona domanda. Perchè, Colonello (risata)? (Tom Parker: non ho sentito, qual’è la domanda?)

Perché hanno girato il concerto a Boston, non potevano girarlo qui? (Tom Parker: girarlo qui, avrebbe potuto essere considerato fuori legge)

D. Che cosa ci dice sulla politica?

E.P. Non mi riguarda, io sono solo un intrattenitore

D. Perché non giri o scrivi una biografia su di te?

E.P. Penso che non sia ancora l’ora. Può darsi che un giorno io lo faccia, ma non al momento. Se riuscissi a trovare il modo giusto di farlo, mi piacerebbe fare qualcosa tipo una sceneggiatura per il cinema. Infatti, lo stiamo valutando adesso. State parlando di qualcosa che non ha a che fare con le canzoni. Si, mi piacerebbe farlo. E’ difficile trovare buon materiale al giorno d’oggi, per tutti. E’ difficile trovare una qualsiasi buona canzone rock, veramente. Se le trovassi, le farei.

Penso che ci siano troppe società, tutti diventano indipendenti, non appena hanno una hit, costituiscono una propria società. E ce ne sono così tante.

Inoltre ci sono anche autori di canzoni che stanno iniziando a cantare da sé i loro pezzi. Ecco perché dico che è difficile trovare buon materiale. Io ho una mia società, ma se è buon materiale, prenderò canzoni da chiunque e da ogni dove. Non deve essere necessariamente della mia società. Può essere stat acomposta da uno sconosciuto o da chiunque scriva canzoni, se mi si adatta. Se è buona. E’ questo che farò.

D.Elvis, che cosa ne pensi del tuo successo negli anni 50?

E.P. A parte gli scherzi, è stato tutto così veloce per tutti noi, mia madre e mio padre e tutti. Tutto è successo in una notte, e così abbiamo dovuto organizzare un sacco di cose molto velocemente. Non rimpiango molto questa cosa. Mi diverte molto di più adesso che quella volta. Voglio credere che ci siamo migliorati in questi 15 anni. 

D. Ti dà fastidio la gente che ti riconosca e ti chieda autografi?

E.P. No, ci sono abituato. Sentirei la mancanza se succedesse che nessuno mi noti o mi riconosca e cose simili o non mi chiedesse un autografo… beh, fa parte del business, e lo accetto. Penso che mi mancherebbe tutto questo.

D. Ci sarà una registrazione di questo concerto? 

E.P. E’ possibile. Non lo so. Qui, ci sono degli addetti della RCA VictoE.P. Non so.

D. Di tutte le tue incisioni, qual’è la canzone che preferisci?

E.P. “It’s now or never”, “O sole mio” (Applauso).

“O sole mio” è stata la più venduta, dopo "Don't be Cruel," I think, then "Hound Dog", "Heartbreak Motel, "

E.P. Sono stato alle Hawaii per essere abbronzato per New York (risate).

Sono arrivato stanotte molto tardi e dovrei andare a dormire, perché abbiamo appena fatto una prova e la rifarò dopo questa conferenza stampa….. a meno che non abbiate in mente qualcosa di meglio (risate)

D. Tua moglie Priscilla è qui con te?

E.P. No, non c’è. Aspetta lo chiedo a mio padre? Devo (ride) in quanto è lui che segue i miei affari personali

D. Bene signore…. Quando si è reso conto veramente che suo figlio era più di un figlio tradizionale

Vernon Presley: Mah, è difficile da dire. Sai è successo tutto così rapidamente. C’è stato uno scoppio durante la notte e tutto era già successo. Così dico, probabilmente era il 1956 ed il primo show televisivo. Ho cercato di dirglielo immediatamente, ma lui non ha voluto ascoltare.

Si suppone che oggi sia il giorno in cui, Elvis rilascia un’intervista solo audio per il documentario “On Tour”, dal suo camerino della MGM, anche se si racconta che l’abbia fatta la settimana dopo. Il Colonnello organizza una conferenza stampa, tra il Dinner e il Midnight show, insieme ad Elvis e il presidente della RCA, Rocco Ginestra, per dare l’annuncio che il 14 gennaio ci sarà l’Aloha From Hawaii, con diffusione via satellite, in tutto il mondo. I giornalisti vengono informati che si presume che ci saranno 1 milione e 400.000 di telespettatori, che per la prima volta vedranno un concerto live in diretta, in tutto il mondo. (Questo però non è esatto, perché in modo particolare l’Europa e l’America lo vedranno con tempi diversi, dove l’America lo potrà vedere solo il 4 aprile 1973). Unico produttore sarà la RCA Records Tour, spiazzando così il Management III, ricevendo $ 100.000 su $ 1.000.000 di costi che dovrà sostenere la NBC per questo show. La RCA pubblica anche un disco di questo evento e, secondo quanto dichiara la stampa, “questo è la prima volta che succede nell’industria musicale“ che un album venga realizzato dalla registrazione di un concerto live. Appare evidente che questa è un’iniziativa del Colonnello che lascia Elvis senza parole “E’ difficile da capire” ripeterà più volte, Elvis durante la conferenza stampa “ma questa è la parte del mio lavoro che preferisco, un concerto live”

Il Colonnello firma un accordo con la RCA Records Tour, secondo il quale quest’ultima è l’unico sponsor di tutti i tours di Elvis a partire da Novembre 1972 fino alla fine del 1973. Elvis tiene una nuova conferenza stampa, nella Rainbow Rib Room all’Hilton's Hawaiian Village hotel, per ridare l’annuncio che il concerto in mondovisione, via satellite, avrà luogo il mattino del 14 Gennaio 1973, con un concerto di prova generale che avrà luogo la sera del 13 gennaio, davanti ad un pubblico live al mattino. Viene anche dato l’annuncio che l’incasso sarà devoluto alla fondazione Kui Lee Cancer Fund. La cosa è stata suggerita dal giornalista Eddie Sherman di Honolulu.
