Preso dall’impeto del momento, Elvis decide di andare in Colorado per fare una vacanza, con Linda e altre 17 persone. Dopo aver fatto il check-in in un hotel di Denver, Elvis spedisce a Vail Joe Esposito, Jerry Kennedy, un ufficiale della polizia di Denver e Ron Pietrafeso, affinché trovino case e alloggi da affittare sufficienti per tutti

Elvis trascorre il suo 41° compleanno, in una casa che ha affittato alle pendici di Vail, Colorado, con Jerry Schilling e Myrna Smith, che già da un anno vivono assieme e forse si sposeranno. E’ una vacanza ricca di tensioni, prevalentemente dovute ai continui ed oscillanti sbalzi d’ umore di Elvis. Tutti si sono ritirati nei loro appartamenti e sono piuttosto arrabbiati. Elvis si trova praticamente da solo, anche perché non si sente bene. Alla fine Linda chiama Jerry e Myrna, dicendo loro che non c’è nessuno con Elvis. Lui è piuttosto a terra e lei ha preparato una torta. Quando Myrna e Jerry arrivano Elvis solleva a malapena la testa. Quando però, i suoi amici si siedono attorno al tavolo ed iniziano a chiacchierare, Elvis chiede a Myrna se ha mai visto “Across 110th Street” uno dei suoi film preferiti degli ultimi tempi, interpretato da Yaphet Kotto ed Antony Quinn. Myrna risponde di no e questa scoperta è il risveglio di Elvis che inizia a raccontare il film e a recitarne ogni dialogo, cosa che si dilunga fino alle prime ore del mattino.
Nel frattempo, gli altri ragazzi con le rispettive mogli e ragazze stanno prendendo lezioni di sci e, quella sera, dopo aver affittato una motoslitta, per un momento, Elvis compare sui pendii, quel tanto per provocare le ire di Susan Ford, (figlia del futuro presidente degli Stati Uniti), che lo rimprovera di non rispettare i regolamenti locali e far scrivere, nel numero del 10 febbraio dal National Enquirer il titolo “Questo è Elvis, il NIGHTSTALKER”(Elvis avanza furtivamente nella notte), corredato da varie illustrazioni e foto.

Su invito di Elvis, il Dr. Nick parte per Denver, con la sua famiglia per poi, il giorno dopo, proseguire per Memphis. Il Dr. Nick tornerà in Colorado giovedì 15 gennaio, mentre suo figlio rimarrà, perchè è diventato un nuovo componente della corte.

Come gesto di ringraziamento ai ragazzi che sono in carico, Elvis regala 2 Lincolns e una cadillac a Jerry Kennedy, Ron Pietraseo e a Gerald Starkey, oltre a una cadillac per Linda e una per la fidanzata di Joe, Shirley Dieu. La fattura è di $70.000

Parlando della generosità di Elvis nei confronti dei suoi amici poliziotti, il giornalista televisivo di Denver, Don Kinney, scherza in diretta dicendo che anche a lui piacerebbe avere una macchina. Elvis gli compra una Seville.
Nel frattempo la vacanza è degenerata in amare fratture, per liti interne, nel corso delle quali Jerry Schilling se ne va, per il quieto vivere, dicendo ad Elvis che l’amicizia è più importante del posto di lavoro

Da oggi decorre il nuovo accordo tra Elvis è il Colonnello della divisione al 50-50, su tutti i concerti live, che dice “Con il presente le parti concordano che questi (tours) sono una joint venture e che Elvis Presley è responsabile delle sue esibisceances, mentre il Col. Tom Parker e i suoi rappresentanti, sono responsabili per l’advertising e la promozione dello show…… Questo accordo e autorizzazione avrà una durata di sette anni, con decorrenza 22 gennaio 1976

Elvis è tornato a Memphis per una session di registrazione speciale che si terrà a Graceland. Poiché, già da marzo, né Travis né il Colonnello sono in grado di attirare Elvis in uno studio di registrazione, Jarvis ha organizzato di portare a Graceland un impianto mobile della RCA, con un camion rosso. Dopo essere stati spostati tutti i mobili in stile polinesiano, i cavi elettrici vengono portati nella stanza passando attraverso la cucina. Questa stanza diventerà famosa come la Jungle Room.

Oggi dovrebbe aver inizio la session di registrazione, ma viene rimandata perché Elvis è stato chiamato fuori città per essere presenta al funerale dell’ufficiale di polizia di Denver, Eugene Kennedy, fratello del Capitano Jerry Kennedy. Elvis organizza affinché JD Sumner e gli Stamps cantino al funerale e presenzia alla cerimonia indossando un’uniforme di capitano di polizia fatta su misura.

Inizia la session di registrazione programmata a Graceland, con grandi speranze che nell’ ambiente familiare di casa sua, Elvis sia in grado di produrre qualcosa. Nonostante la band sia composta dagli stessi musicisti che sono sempre on stage con lui, Elvis non la vive in questo modo, ma si presenta vestito con la sua uniforme di poliziotto ed è evidente che la sua mente è concentrata su tutto fuorché la session e quando riesce a farlo so focalizza quasi sempre su materiale triste. Riescono comunque a fare 3 master, lavorando dalle 20.00 alle 9.30 del mattino successivo ed Elvis registra Bitter They Are Harder They Fall, She Thinks I Still Care e The Last Farewell

La session va avanti dalle 21.00 alle 10.30 del mattino dopo e viene registrata solo “Solitarie, una canzone di Neil Sedaka. Infatti Elvis è sempre distratto e ogni tanto si ritira in camera sua (dove complotta con Red e Sonny West su come combattere i trafficanti di droga a Memphis), per poi tornare alla session con uno spirito al limite della paranoia

La session continua con lo stesso spirito di ieri e si registrano solo altre due canzoni e più esattamente la nuova canzone di Mark James, “Moody Blue”, il futuro singolo e "Never Fall In Love Again

Dalle 21 del giovedì sera, fino alle 14 del venerdì, la session è caratterizzata da molte partenze ed arresti. Non c’è alcun dubbio, però, che Elvis si impegni molto con l’ultima canzone di Tennis Linde “For The Heart” ed esegue di “Hurt”, il successo di Roy Hamilton del 1954, in una performance piena di pathos

Poiché la session di ieri si è prolungata fino alle 14, quella di oggi non inizia prima di mezzanotte, se pur in 8 ore vengono completate solo due canzoni Never Again e Love Coming Down

James Burton, Jerry Scheff e Glen D. Hardin sono costretti a lasciare, a causa di impegni presi precedentemente, ma che non avrebbero interferito con il loro impegno se le sessions precedenti non fossero state rinviate. Con questo concerto Elvis apre un tour di 11 giorni con un compenso di $ 315.000 per fare aggiungere uno show alle 22 nei fine settimana, quindi il venerdì e il sabato dovrà fare due concerti a sera.
Durante questo concerto, John O’ Grady, l’investigatore privato con cui Elvis ha rapporti sin dal 1970, va a trovare Elvis e racconta “Mi sono sentito così preoccupato per lui, che ho pianto. Era grasso. Aveva dei blocchi motori che non gli permettevano di camminare…. Ho veramente pensato che stesse per morire”.
A seguito di questa esperienza O’ Grady e il legale di Elvis a Los Angeles, Ed Hookstratten, discuteranno la possibilità di far entrare Elvis in un programma di disintossicazione presso la Scripps Clinic di San Diego, ma la cosa non ha mai avuto un seguito.

Oggi Vernon fa tre telefonate importanti: la prima è a Sonny West a Memphis, la seconda a Red West in California e la terza all’esperto di karate Dave Hebler.
Ognuna di queste telefonate è per comunicare la fine del loro lavoro con Elvis, dando una settimana di liquidazione.
La falsa motivazione che Vernon dà è che è stato un anno difficile e si è costretti a stringere la cinghia.
I veri motivi invece sono gli attriti che ci sono all’interno del gruppo da tempo e il sospetto che Vernon ha sempre avuto che suo figlio non sia altro che qualcuno di cui approfittare.
I tre uomini si sentono enormemente offesi, non tanto per il fatto che siano stati licenziati senza nessun riguardo, quanto per il fatto che Elvis non si è minimamente preso la briga di farlo lui di persona.
Red è quello che si sente più offeso, visto il legame con Elvis che risale ai tempi della scuola superiore.
Questo stesso giorno, Elvis permuta il suo aeroplano Deassault-Falcon, comprato come investimento nel 1975, con un secondo Lockheed Jet-star. Il JetStar diventerà il centro di una lunga e prolungata indagine dell’FBI, in quanto appare come una sofisticata truffa ai danni di Elvis e Vernon in cui è coinvolta anche la compagnia aerea.

The Bicentennial Elvis Experience
Durante questo show, Elvis appare stanco, imbronciato e durante tutto lo spettacolo, sembra essere senza fiato. Il suo respiro si appesantisce, mano a mano che sale.
All’inizio di “I Got A Woman” canta il primo verso, poi aggiunge “Ecco adesso… Ecco come mi sento veramente. Sapete, abbiamo fatto uno spettacolo a tarda notte, ieri e ho potuto dormire solo 2 ore, così……” Dopo la canzone dà il benvenuto alla folla “Buon pomeriggio. Dio come sembra strano “Buon pomeriggio” Mi sono appena alzato!….”
Prima di presentare la band, Elvis legge un biglietto che gli ha dato qualcuno del pubblico.
Una persona del pubblico chiede “Per cortesia, puoi fare Return To Sender?” e lui risponde “Dolcezza, se la sappiamo!”.
Come sempre, durante la presentazione della band, la squadra suona, e così in sordina cambiano ritmo ed Elvis canta un verso della canzone, con grandi applausi. “Mi dispiace, ma non l’abbiamo provata abbastanza”.
Ovviamente è cosciente del suo modo di parlare leggermente impastato e fa in modo di correggersi un errore durante le presentazioni: “Chiederò a John di suonare la chitarra da dietro la testa. Sa farlo…….. intendo James! John, Matthew, Mark, Luke.” E James Burton, immediatamente, “esplode” con la sua chitarra.
La giornalista del Newport News Times-Herald Cheryl Tucker descrive il concerto come una performance sconnessa, che comunque viene ancora salutata dai leali fans di Elvis con esultanza. “A giudicare dalla sua performance” scrive “il pubblico gridava per quello che lui era e per quello che rappresentava, più che per quello che è oggi”

Prima di questo show, Elvis entra in paranoia perché risulta essere senza fondi personali ed inizia ad avvilirsi, ritenendo che la sua vita sia diventata un disastro.

Tramite il suo avvocato, rapidamente Elvis recede dall’affare del racquetball. Vuole che il suo nome venga tolto dal progetto, perché, dice, contrariamente a quanto aveva capito inizialmente, ora gli è chiaro che, per far parte della società, quello che ci si aspetta da lui è solo un considerevole apporto di denaro.
Più che l’aspetto legale della questione, Elvis si sente ferito nei suoi sentimenti ed è molto arrabbiato con Joe Esposito e il Dr. Nick per averlo messo in prima linea su questo affare.
Elvis rimugina di licenziare sia Joe Esposito che il Dr. Nick.
Qualche giorno dopo Elvis telefona a Nichopoulos per dirgli che si troverà un altro medico da portarsi dietro, nel prossimo tour.

Elvis inizia il suo 6° tour con una spettacolare performance, tanto da risollevare il morale anche alla band. Il Dr. Grahem sostituisce il Dr. Nichopoulos, anche se l’infermiera del Dr. Nick, Tish Hensley, è rimasta nel tour. All’inizio dell’anno l’infermiera si è trasferita in un trailer, dietro Graceland.
Sam Thompson, il fratello di Linda, dopo essersi licenziato dal Memphis Sheriff’ Departement (con un solo giorno di preavviso, con questo tour entra ufficialmente a far parte dell’entourage di Elvis, come capo della sicurezza insieme a Dick Grob, in sostituzione di Red e Sonny West.
A questo tour si unisce anche Larry Geller e diventa nuovamente parte dell’entourage, dopo essere stato cacciato nel 1967.
Negli ultimi mesi Larry ha passato sempre più tempo con Elvis. Ormai sono svanite tutte le antipatie verso Geller e persino il Colonnello è diventato più pragmatico.
Il rinnovato interesse per la spiritualità e la presenza di Larry Geller, rendono Elvis più felice, a vantaggio anche delle sue performances

Bob Claypool dello Houston Post, nel suo articolo, ha descritto lo show di ieri sera “incoerente in modo deprimente, dilettantesco disordine servito da una figura gonfia, traballante e brontolona, che si è esibito come “il re di niente, tanto meno del rock ‘n roll” . Il critico scrive anche “Elvis Presley ha spezzato i cuori per più di vent’anni, ora e sabato pomeriggio – in un modo completamente nuovo e inaspettato – ha spezzato il mio”
La reazione del Colonnello è puro panico. Se i giornalisti riescono a vedere questo, allora possono vederlo anche i fans. E’ distrutto nel sentire che ne parlano anche i poliziotti messi per rafforzare la sicurezza. Tornato a Memphis dopo il suo tour, Elvis viene visto correre in motocicletta.
Da questo momento cominciano a girare voci che Red e Sonny West insieme a Dave Hebler stanno scrivendo un libro sulla loro vita con Elvis.
Infatti dopo un primo contatto da parte di Rick Husty e Frank Liebermann, già corrispondente del Los Angeles Herald-Examiner, i tre sono nel bel mezzo di una collaborazione con Steve Dunleavy del giornale The Star per fare le loro rivelazioni. Elvis vola a Los Angeles per stare con Linda Thompson nel suo nuovo appartamento. Ritira anche una Ferrari che aveva ordinato ad Hollywood.
Si incontra anche con un investigatore privato, John O’ Grady, che sta cercando di convincere Elvis ad essere più produttivo in merito alla pubblicazione del libro delle sue guardie del corpo. Elvis autorizza O’ Grady a cercare di contattare i tre per fare un’offerta in denaro.
Il piano fallisce, perché, nonostante O’ Grady abbia offerto $ 50.000 a testa, nonché la proposta di far loro avere un nuovo lavoro, i ragazzi rifiutano.
A casa di Linda, O’Grady riferisce il tutto ad Elvis, dicendogli che vorrebbe fare più pressione, ma Elvis rifiuta.

Elvis torna a Memphis con Linda e arrivano a casa alle 4 del mattino. Quel giorno Red West lo chiama dalla California, ma Charlie Hodge gli dice che Elvis dorme. Red non ci crede e sospetta che Elvis stia ascoltando sull’altra linea.

Elvis richiama Red West e, per la prima volta, dopo il licenziamento, fanno una lunga chiacchierata. Elvis appare confuso e incoerente e Red registra la conversazione.
Da ambo le parti il tono è pieno di rammarico.
Elvis non riesce mai ad affrontare Red direttamente, ma riesce solo a dire: “Se hai bisogno di me per qualsiasi cosa, sarò più che felice di aiutarti. Fai quello che devi fare. Voglio solo che tu che Pat sappiate che io sono sempre e ancora qui”

Questo è il primo show del nuovo tour di Elvis, il 7° tour del 1976
Elvis, Linda Thompson e il suo entourage, alle 2.20 del mattino, lasciano Memphis. a bordo del Lisa Marie. Alle 4 arrivano all’Arlington Park Hilton hotel, dove hanno riservato l’appartamento nr. 38, che include 3 suites, all’11° piano. Elvis è stanchissimo e dorme tutto il giorno.
I biglietti per questo spettacolo sono stati messi in vendita dopo quelli relativi allo spettacolo del 15 ottobre, che al 21 settembre aveva già il tutto esaurito.
L’incasso per questo show, e quelli del giorni seguenti è di $ 426.000 cadauno.
Lo spettacolo non dà il riscontro previsto e, parte del problema è dovuto al suono all’interno dello stadio.
Durante la prima metà del concerto, Elvis si sentiva a malapena sopra i musicisti e i coristi.
Cynthia Dagnal del Sunday-Times scrive: "Un' adorabile signorina si avvicina al palco, con un mazzo di fiori in mano. Lui si abbassa, e mano a mano che si avvicina a lei, si riesce sentire il battito del cuore di ogni donna. Lui le da quell’occhiatina dolce e sexy e con quella sua voce che gli esce da qualche parte profonda del suo ventre gonfio, le dice “Cara cos’hai in mente?” E poi con un sorriso sornione, le dice “Ora, non posso farlo…… cara, qui ci sono dei bambini.” Poi le dà un bacio e, da ogni angolo, i cuori esplodono all’unisono in un gigantesco gemito. Quest’uomo non ha bisogno di muoversi, lui traspira fascino.

Il titolo dell’articolo “IL DRAMMATICO APPELLO DI ELVIS ALLA SUA EX GUARDIA DEL CORPO: NON SCRIVERE QUEL LIBRO SU DI ME”, è un risveglio devastante per Elvis, perchè quella che riteneva una conversazione privata tra lui e il suo amico, ora è fuori controllo e di dominio pubblico.

Poiché Elvis può tornare a casa a qualsiasi ora dal suo 7° tour, il camion di registrazione della RCA è parcheggiato dietro Graceland.

Ancora una volta è stato creato uno studio di fortuna, nella Jungle Room, a Graceland, dove la prima notte di session inizia alle 21.00 e termina alle 8 del mattino.
Vengono registrate solo tre canzoni, tra cui “Way Down” utile per il lato A del prossimo singolo.
Come successo nella precedente session di registrazione, Elvis passa la maggior parte del tempo in camera sua, dove, occasionalmente, invita a salire i 16 musicisti presenti, regalando loro alcuni suoi vestiti, camicie, cinture.

Questa è la seconda sera in cui i musicisti sono riuniti nella Jungle Room per la session di registrazione della RCA.
Mentre aspettano l’arrivo di Elvis, registrano un paio di tracce strumentali.
Finalmente Elvis arriva, ma si ferma solo per un attimo, perchè è in arrivo una “partita” di Harley-Davidson.
Elvis insiste per portarli a fare un giro di prova andata e ritorno fino alla casa di Linda, giusto dietro l’angolo.
Dopo questo Elvis riappare nella Jungle Room, brandendo un mitra Thompson, tanto per giocare.
Verso l’alba, finalmente Elvis si scusa con il gruppo, ammettendo che non è dell’umore giusto per registrare
Felton Jarvis annulla il resto della session e la nottata termina con Elvis che chiama il Lisa Marie, per accompagnare a casa i musicisti che abitano nella West Coast e il jetstar per quelli che abitano a Nashville, assicurandosi che tutti abbiano un mezzo per tornare a casa, al pundo da regalare la sua limousine bianca a J.D. Sumner, affinché lui e gli Stamps possano tornare a Nashville con un certo stile ed eleganza.

Elvis ha conosciuto Ginger solo ieri e già decidono di uscire assieme. Iniziano facendo un giro in aereo per vedere l’rozzonte, ma, dopo la telefonata di Ginger alla madre, per chiederle il permesso, finiscono con l’andare a Las Vegas. Insieme a loro ci sono Patsy e Gee Gee Gambill.

Jerry-Lee Lewis viene arrestato ai cancelli di Graceland. Questa è la seconda sera che Jerry Lee Lewis si presenta ai cancelli di Graceland, dove, secondo quanto raccontano vari testimoni, sbraita e bestemmia, brandendo una pistola e chiedendo di vedere Elvis.Secondo quanto racconta la polizia, al loro arrivo, il cantante stava seduto in macchina con una calibro 38 carica, appoggiata sulle ginocchia.

Elvis ha iniziato questo suo impegno a Las Vegas con grandi performances. Poco prima dello show di questa sera cade e si fa male ad una caviglia, che per qualche giorno continuerà a dargli fastidio. I ricordi dei fans ci danno un’idea mista degli spettacoli. Da un lato è ovvio che Elvis non è nelle sue condizioni fisiche migliori e sembra stanco e triste, ma dall’altro lato c’è il “performer” che è sempre stato, quello che cerca di dare il massimo al suo pubblico.
Questo che segue è un estratto preso dal libro 'Elvis: The Man And His Music' secondo come vuene ricordato da un fan che si trovava tra il pubblico
In questo sabato sera, Jackie Kahane fa il suo numero di 25 minuti per riscaldare l’ambiente e il pubblico è rilassato. Si sente un certo movimento dietro la tenda dorata e Kahane si mette di alto sul palco e ascolta per qualche minuto “Signore e Signori, mi è stato chiesto di continuare ancora un po’, perché sembra che, di sopra, nella suite di Elvis, ci sia qualche piccolo problema. Pare che Elvis si sia slogato la caviglia, ma non preoccupatevi, a momenti sarà qui sul palco”. Dopo un lungo intervallo le luci si abbassano e inizia lo spettacolo.
La tenda si alza ed Elvis arriva sul palco da sinistra. James Burton e John Wilkinson (chitarristi) si guardano nervosamente l’un l’altro. Elvis si appoggia a Charlie Hodge. Si vede che sta male. Il suo viso è pallido e gonfio. I suoi capelli sono completamente bagnati e cascanti sul viso, come se fosse appena uscito dalla doccia. Appena Elvis prende la chitarra da Charlie e si avvicina al microfono sembra ubriaco...
Dopo See See Rider, Elvis con un modo di parlare impastato, spiega al pubblico, la sua storia poco convincente, dell’incidente nella doccia. I movimenti del suo corpo sono fuori controllo. Continua a cantare e poi chiede al pubblico se dà fastidio se si siede. Elvis canta ancora quale canzone, stando seduto sulla sedia e poi inizia un discorso su un anello con il diamante nero, che ha appena acquistato.
Il pubblico si sta stancando e qualcuno lascia la sala, manifestando il fastidio per uno spettacolo misero e chiede indietro i soldi. Anche i musicisti si stanno infastidendo per il fatto che non suonano. La tensione in sala va peggiorando sempre più, anche se si direbbe che peggio di così non potrebbe andare. Improvvisamente Elvis sembra uscire dalla zona ombrosa e torna alla normalità. Salta dalla sedia. La sua voce è meno legata, nonostante lui sia ancora un po’ malfermo. Da questo momento, lo spettacolo è come avrebbe dovuto essere, se pur non all’altezza usuale.
Dopo I can’t Help Falling In Love, Elvis lascia il palco, completamente esausto, ma senza zoppicare.

Dopo questo show, mentre è nella sua suite, Elvis scrive alcune note su un foglio di carta, con cui spiega il suo stato d’animo disperato.
Un addetto alle pulizie trova questi appunti nel cestino della carta straccia, che si trova nella sua camera.
Sul foglio c’è scritto:
“Certe volte mi sento così solo
Per me la notte è tranquilla
Vorrei poter dormire
Sono contento che ora tutti se ne siano andati
Probabilmente stasera non dormirò
Io non ho bisogno di tutto questo
Aiutami Signore.”
La sua calligrafia non è solo su quel foglio, ma anche su una parete della camera da letto!! .

Dopo essere rimasta con lui a Las Vegas per quasi 2 settimane, Elvis cerca di convincere Ginger a rimanere con lui per tutto il periodo del tour, ma Ginger gli dice che vuole vedere la sua famiglia. A quel punto Elvis manda l’aereo a prendere sua madre, suo padre, suo fratello con la moglie e le sue due sorelle, facendoli arrivare a Las Vegas.
Durante il 2° show di questa sera Elvis è molto stanco e si vede. Al pubblico, dice persino: “Odio Las Vegas”. Porterà a termine lo show, ma non senza aver fatto un lungo discorso al pubblico, parlando dei suoi pensieri.
