La Graceland Christian Church, il cui proprietà confina con Graceland, concede ad Elvis la possibilità di utilizzo del passaggio, per poter entrare ed uscire dall’Highway 51, evitando le folle di fans. Per contro, Elvis si impegna a pagare una tassa di $ 10 e si prende carico della pavimentazione della strada. Garantisce inoltre che non farà passare veicoli sulla strada durante le cerimonie domenicali, salvo situazioni di assoluta necessità.

Elvis parla con un’infinità di musicisti che conosce per poterli ingaggiare per gli spettacoli di Las Vegas.

Alla fine mette insieme una band composta dal chitarrista leader James Burton che a sua volta porta Larry Muhoberbach (prima Larry Owen) di Memphis, la cui band era presente al concerto di beneficenza di Elvis del 1961.

Muhoberbach, dal canto suo, suggerisce un batterista di Dallas, che si chiama Ronnie Tutt. Burton contatta anche il basso Jerry Scheff e la chitarra ritmica John Wilkinson (che già ha firmato un contratto con la RCA come solista).

Elvis contatta personalmente gli Imperials, per poter avere un quartetto gospel maschile, come back singers. Gli Imperials avevano già cantato con Elvis nella session per l’album How Great Thou Art, nel 1966.

Elvis chiama anche le Sweet Inspirations, un gruppo femminile di soul che ammira molto, anche se non ha mai conosciuto personalmente.

L’idea di Elvis che creare e portare sul palco degli spettacoli che contengano tutta la musica che lo ha influenzato.

Iniziano le prove degli shows agli RCA Studios sul Sunset Boulevard. 

In sei notti impareranno 150 canzoni.

Visto che finora non ha mai fatto uno show di un’ora, con Charlie Hodge, Elvis studia la tempistica dello spettacolo, andando avanti e indietro sulle canzoni

Nel frattempo, già da settimane, il Colonnello Parker ha iniziato la preparazione di tutto l’advertising utile a promuove il ritorno di Elvis ai concerti live

Su suo invito, Elvis e i ragazzi assistono ad uno degli shows di Barbra Streisand.

Elvis dice a Charlie Hodge che lo show sembra molto “un grande palco ancora da riempire” e che il suo non sarà così, perché non sarà solo sul palco, ma nel suo show ci saranno anche i coristi e una band.

Il Colonnello Parker continua con l’organizzazione della campagna pubblicitaria, facendo preparare spille, palloncini, posters, calendari, foto, ecc, e contemporaneamente organizza un vero e proprio martellamento alle radio e alle televisioni.

Parker dice ad Elvis “Anche i cammelli del deserto sapranno che sei qui e chiunque in città saprà che Elvis sta arrivando, ma tu se l’unico che può portarli qui”

Durante la giornata, Elvis si è svolta l’ultima prova generale dello show con l’orchestra, la band e i back singers ripetendo due volte l’intero concerto di apertura,.

Il pubblico presente è tutto su invito e tra gli invitati ci sono Cary Grant, Fats Domino, Pat Boone, Carol Channing, Sam Phillips (invitato personalmente da Elvis) oltre che un gran numero di componenti della stampa che il Colonnello ha mandato a prendere con il jet privato di Kirk Kerkorian.

Lo show viene aperto dalle Sweet Insipiration alle 20.15, mentre, nel backstage, Elvis è bloccato da un tremendo attacco di panico che non gli permette di salire sul palco fino alle 22.15.

Arrivato sul palco, Elvis esita un momento e poi parte con lo show.

La risposta dello show è sensazionale e il pubblico di celebrità rimane praticamente in piedi per tutto lo show applaudendolo.

Dopo il concerto, Elvis tiene una conferenza stampa nella sala riunioni dell’hotel

Nel frattempo, nel coffe shop dell’hotel, Parker, su un tovagliolo rosa, conclude la trattativa per un nuovo contratto, che verrà formalizzato ufficialmente nei prossimi giorni.

Il nuovo contratto prevede un compenso per Elvis di $ 125.000 a settimana e l’estensione dell’impegno dell’International Hotel ai prossimi 5 anni, con due ingaggi all’anno.

Questo garantisce ad Elvis $ 1.000.000 all’anno per un lavoro di solo 8 settimane, fino al 1974, anche se sono a suo carico tutte le spese correlate ai suoi spettacoli.

Alle 21.00, nello Studio C della RCA sul Sunset Boulevard di Hollywood, inizia la session ed Elvis arriva con Sheila Ryan e Lisa Marie.

La RCA è particolarmente ansiosa ottenere da questa session abbastanza materiale, per fare almeno un singolo ed un album. Infatti non avendo avuto una sola session da Elvis nel 1974, praticamente non c’è niente da inserire.

Lavorando solo con il suo gruppo dei Voice, come backup singers, fino alle 7 del mattino, Elvis cerca di fare quattro master, tra cui “Fairytale” delle Pointer Sisters (suggeritagli da Linda) e “And I Love You So” di Don McLean, che in studio Elvis dedica a Sheila.

Le canzoni registrate sono Fairytale, Green Green Grass Of Home, I Can Help e And I Love You So

Lavorando quasi tanto quanto la sera prima (10 ore) Elvis riesce a registrare 4 master, tra cui T-R-O-U-B-L-E, ” Shake A Hand”, un brano di Faye Adams che Elvis conosce nella versione originale del 1953, ma che Felton Jarvis porta alla session, nell’ album di Delbert McClinton.

Le altre canzoni sono Susan When She Tried, Tiger Man e Woman Without Love

Elvis conclude la session allo studio C della RCA di Hollywood alle 3.30 del mattino, con il completamento di altri due master. Le dieci canzoni registrate possono essere sufficienti per un album, ma non c’è niente a disposizione per far uscire un singolo

Elvis presenta Lee Majors al pubblico, dicendo “Un mio caro amico che ha lavorato per me come guardia del corpo quando a Hollywood era disoccupato… vorrebbe un TCB, ma non vuole portarmi sua moglie. Lui ha sposato quella ragazza che fa la pubblicità dello shampoo e io lo odio” A quel punto Major sale sul palco, prende una sciarpa dal collo di Elvis e la getta al pubblico. Ed Elvis commenta “Ma guarda come sono volubili queste ragazze!”

Allo show di mezzanotte è presente anche Barbra Streisand, insieme al suo compagno, il parrucchiere John Peters.

Dopo lo spettacolo la Streisand va a trovare Elvis nel backstage, per offrirgli un ruolo da protagonista nel suo prossimo film “E’ nata una stella”, che è un remake di un classico di Hollywood e che, secondo il programma attuale, verrà prodotto e diretto da Peters (nonostante una sua unica esperienza precedente che poi si è dimostrata un fiasco)

Elvis si dimostra molto entusiasta del progetto.

Nei giorni successivi, però il Colonnello scoraggia il progetto completamente, disquisendo su chi avrà il controllo sul film, quanto verrà pagato e soprattutto, fino a che punto il coinvolgimento di Peters potrebbe avere degli effetti sulla carriera di Elvis per come verrà presentato e diretto.

Il progetto andrà a monte, perché Parker pretenderà un compenso esorbitante.

Il film vincerà un Oscar come miglior canzone, per “Evergreen” di Streisand/Williams nel 1976 e il Grammy Award nel 1977

Il concerto di chiusura del tour di Las Vegas si conclude con una battaglia d’acqua tra i musicisti e i cantanti. La baldoria arriva al suo culmine quando Lamar Fike e il Colonnello arrivano sul palco vestiti da Babbo Natale

Elvis lascia Las Vegas in aereo diretto a Los Angeles.

La società di produzione della Streisand, First Artist, in collaborazione con la Warner Brothers, fa la sua formale offerta ad Elvis offrendogli uno stipendio $ 500.000 e il 10% dei profitti, ma senza alcun compenso per la parte musicale. In compenso ad Elvis e il Colonnello, però, viene offerto di produrre i due concerti live che ci sono nel film e trarne profitto da questi.

Con 10 giorni di ritardo, tramite l’agenzia di William Morris, arriva la risposta del colonnello all’offerta di Barbra Streisand che ha questi termini: per fare il Film, Elvis deve avere un compenso di $ 1.000.000, più $ 100.000 per le spese e il 50% dei profitti, nonché l’approvazione di qualsiasi canzone che dovrà cantare. Inoltre dovrà essere fatta una trattativa separata per negoziare i diritti sulla colonna sonora. Nella lettera al Roger Davis, l’avvocato della William Morris, il Colonnello scrive “Mr. Presley vorrebbe fare questo film, ma io l’ho messo in guardia di non permettere che questo suo desiderio porti ad una trattativa sotto costo”.

Alla fine del mese c’è qualche patema a riguardo del film, visto che l’interesse di Elvis è diminuito e la First Artist sembra non abbia mai fatto alcuna controproposta.

Sognando di crearsi una flotta aerea, al prezzo di $ 250.000, Elvis acquista un jet Corvair 880, messo in disuso dalla Delta Airlines. L’acquisto dell’aereo verrà ufficializzato l’11 giugno e si chiamerà Lisa Marie. A Forth Wood, Texas, verrà totalmente rimesso a nuovo e i lavori costeranno altri $ 500.000.

Le amenità interne includono un letto regale, accessori in oro e un impianto di registrazione, mentre sulla coda dell’aereo viene stampato il logo TCB

Tornato a Memphis, Elvis acquista una casa al 1245 Old Hictory, vicino a Graceland, per Linda Thompson e la intesta a lei.

Elvis vola a Macon, Georgia per dare inizio ad un nuovo tour che si concluderà con un concerto di beneficenza a Jackson Mississippi, per le vittime del tornado a McComb.
