La presenza di Elvis attira una consistente folla di adolescenti, capitanata dall’ex capoclasse della Humes School, George Klein, che sta passando l’estate lavorando come DJ in una piccola stazione radio dell’Arkansas, dopo che, per la maggior parte dell’anno ha fatto il fattorino per il DJ Dewey

In questo periodo Elvis suona al Betel Springs, Tennessee, non lontano da Jackson. Secondo quanto ricorda Carl Perkins, la festa ha luogo nella palestra della scuola e l’apparizione di Elvis ha un effetto elettrizzante, soprattutto sulle ragazze. Dopo lo spettacolo Carl Perkins chiede ad Elvis che la Sun potrebbe essere interessata a qualcun altro che suoni con lo stesso stile, ma Elvis risponde che non conosce cosa pensa Sam Phillips.
Comunque grazie a questa occasione, ad ottobre, per la prima volta anche Carl Perkins entrerà alla Sun

In questo periodo, Elvis scambia la sua prima vecchia chitarra con una Martin D-18 da $ 175 all’O.K. Houck Piano Company, un negozio sulla Union Avenue.
Durante un’intervista con il giornalista Bob Johnson, Elvis racconterà che per la sua vecchia chitarra, il negoziante gli da $ 8, che Elvis ha buttato nell’immondizia immediatamente “Maledizione, la chitarra suonava ancora bene” ricorda Elvis”
Sulla nuova chitarra, subito sotto le corde, sono incise in metallo le lettere E L V I S, ma nei concerti di ottobre lo spelling del suo nome è inciso sotto le corde, anche se pare si tratti della stessa chitarra

Secondo Randle, lo spettacolo viene filmato per il documentario "The Pied Piper Of Cleveland - A Day In The Life Of A Famous Disc Jockey.", ma non viene mai mandato in onda. Elvis rompe le corde della sua chitarra e arriva persino a buttarsi a terra, mentre il pubblico impazzisce. C’è anche la polizia che è costretta ad accompagnare Elvis all’uscita.
Gladys e Vernon firmano un telegramma preparato da Tom Diskin, in cui garantiscono al Colonnello Parker “la rappresentanza esclusiva del figlio”

Alla fine di questo tour di due settimane Elvis e il Colonnello hanno ben $ 700.000 da dividere tra loro

Nonostante il Colonnello abbia già organizzato un immediato ritorno di Elvis a fare concerti negli stadi, tutti gli altri sono più preoccupati per i loro soldi. Dal canto suo Elvis non ha nessuna intenzione di modificare le sue abitudini di spendere mentre, dall’altra parte, il Colonnello non intende modificare il suo modo di spendere soldi, al gioco d’azzardo.

Oggi il Colonnello scrive a Pat Kellner della RCA Record Tours per far abbassare i costi dei tour e scrive: “Deve esserci un maggior controllo sui costi degli hotels, dei pullmans, dei camion e delle limousines, in modo da evitare spese doppie”.

Tornato a casa, Elvis va spesso al General Cinema di Whitheaven, per vedere “The Day Of The Locust” e “The Four Muskeeters”

Elvis rimprovera il bodyguard per il suo comportamento con il fan, dicendogli: “Non essere così duro con le persone, quando si avvicinano, vengono solo per avere una sciarpa. Non trattarli, come se stessero entrando in prigione. Maledizione!!!!

Elvis viene ricoverato per due giorni al Mid-South Hospital per quello che la stampa definisce “un esame approfondito dell’occhio”. Invece Elvis è lì per sottoporsi ad un intervento di chirurgia estetica alla palpebra. Il Dr. Nick e il chirurgo dell’ospedale hanno cercato di farlo desistere, ma Elvis ha insistito dicendo che se loro non lo vogliono fare, lui ha già un altro medico disposto ad intervenire.
