Tornato a Memphis Elvis fa una dimostrazione di karate per 90 minuti con Ed Parker al Tennessee Karate Institute.

Questa è una nuova scuola che Elvis ha creato e che sarà gestita da Red West e Bobbi Wren, un cugino di Elvis.

Come principale istruttore viene assunto il campione di karate Bill “Superfoot” Wallance che già ha diretto una scuola di karate per conto di Kang Rhee.

Questo segna l’inizio del periodo del suo massimo coinvolgimento con il karate.

Infatti ha anche in mente di fare un film documentario su questa disciplina che può avere effetti positivi sia da un punto di vista fisico che psicologico.

Quest’idea del film va e viene e si alterna immaginandolo come un film alla Bruce Lee in cui lui ha l’opportunità di tornare a recitare e altre volte lo immagina solo come documentario con i filmati delle dimostrazioni di Ed Parker nel suo tour in California e ipotizzando di mandare un team di karate a gareggiare in Europa.

Alla fine la scelta cade sul documentario, per il quale Elvis stesso inizia a stendere una bozza di quella che sarà la narrazione su filmati in cui passano principalmente le esibizioni di Ed Parker e alcune sue fatte qui a Memphis. Elvis sceglie anche il titolo provvisorio che sarà “Il nuovo Gladiatore”

Elvis è a Memphis, dove passerà tutto il mese di luglio a casa, facendo solo qualche puntata a Palm Springs e Las Vegas, sempre decise all’ultimo minuto

Per il resto trascorre le giornate facendo shopping dai Lansky, andando al cinema e presenziando alla partita di apertura di World Football League’s Memphis Southme (in seguito soprannominati Grizzlies).

In questo periodo Linda Thompson cambia completamente l’arredamento interno di Graceland. In totale Linda ha speso $ 62.896,66, di cui $51.504.66 alla Eangle’s Interiors, che verranno pagati a fine anno e $ 11.386 alla Forntner Forniture Company,

La Donald Forniture Company invece ha fornito tutti gli accessori d’arredamento polinesiani per la stanza che oggi è chiamata Jungle Room, nonché i candelabri e lampadari e i vetri decorativi con i pavoni e le rose che oggi si vedono nell’entrata e nella sala da pranzo di Graceland.

Durante i lavori, Elvis si trasferisce all’Howard Johnson Hotel, in fondo alla strada.

Elvis va al Tennessee Karate Institute insieme a Linda, per fare una dimostrazione di karate con Red West e Dave Wallace ed Dave Hebler, uno degli associati a Ed Parker.

A proposito della realizzazione del suo primo film sul karate, il Memphis Commercial Appeal scrive “Voglio i migliori istruttori di karate e specialisti sull’arte dell’autodifesa” dice Elvis, mentre filma una parte del documentario

Elvis Presley riceve il certificato di cintura nera di 8 ° grado dal Maestro Rhee, durante una cerimonia privata. La presentazione ebbe luogo il 16 settembre 1974 nello studio del Maestro Rhee a Memphis.

Questo breve tour di Lake Tahoe, al Sahara Hotel è stato organizzato, per colmare gli show annullati a maggio.

15-10-1974

Elvis va a Las Vegas con Sheila Ryan, per farsi curare dal Dr. Elias Ghahem. Questo medico si era già occupato di Elvis, nel 1972 durante il periodo dei concerti a Las Vegas

16-10-1974

Il Dr. Grahem prescrive ad Elvis degli accertamenti clinici per capire da cosa sono causati i suoi problemi intestinali, da cui si riscontra un’ulcera non curata, con problemi infiammatori di edema alla mucosa gastro-intestinale.

Elvis rimane in un’ala della casa del Dr. Grahem, sottoponendosi ad una profonda “cura del sonno” che consiste in un’ alimentazione liquida e sedativi, raccomandata dallo stesso dottore.

21-10-1974

Il Dr Grahem ordina una serie di analisi per determinare la causa dei problemi intestinali di Elvis. Gli esami stabiliscono l’esistenza di un’ulcera emorragica. Elvis rimane ricoverato in un’ala speciale della clinica del Dr. Grahem, riservata alle celebrità, per seguire una nuova “dieta del sonno” che consiste in nutrimento con liquidi e riposto assoluto, con il supporto di sedativi.

Jerry viene nominato come produttore esecutivo del film sul karate. E’ molto probabile che, sia questa la settimana in cui Elvis compra una casa per Jerry Schilling, mentre Jerry si trovava a Las Vegas. Elvis spiega a Jerry il motivo: “Jerry, sai perché ti ho comprato questa casa? So che farò arrabbiare tutti gli altri ragazzi per questo, ma tua madre morì quanto tu avevi solo un anno e tu non ha mai avuto una casa. Bene, voglio essere io quello che te ne regala una”

Per tornare a Memphis, Elvis lascia Las Vegas con un aereo noleggiato presso la Jet Fleet Corporation

Elvis torna a Palm Spring con Linda. I Voice li raggiungono per la settimana del Ringraziamento, ma per loro, non c’è molto da fare.

Elvis ha concluso in suo impegno di 2 settimane a Las Vegas. L'hotel paga $ 263.142,84, dove al netto delle spese rimangono $180.000 da dividere in 2 terzi e 1 terzo, con il Colonnello

Sembra che Elvis abbia perso tutto l’interesse a fare il film sul karate e il progetto viene abbandonato. Tutto viene chiuso talmente velocemente che nessuno viene pagato per il lavoro delle ultime due settimane. La spiegazione ufficiale è che Elvis ha problemi di salute.

Elvis passa il Natale a Graceland, portando il gruppo dei Voice, avanti e indietro in aereo, per tutto il periodo natalizio

Il singolo My Boy/Loving Arms raggiunge il 5° posto della classifica in U.K. ed è il disco più venduto dopo “Burning Love” nel settembre 1972

Elvis riceve una telefonata dal Colonnello. Questa telefonata ha lo scopo di avere notizie sui problemi di salute di Elvis, visto che, da vari componenti dell’entourage, il colonnello è venuto a conoscenza di vari comportamenti errati e di problemi di salute di Elvis, degli ultimi mesi. Dopo la telefonata con Elvis, Parker ha la conferma che quello che è stato riferito è vero e rende evidente che Elvis non sarà in grado di adempiere all’ingaggio all’Hilton di Las Vegas del prossimo gennaio

30-12-1974

Parker informa l’Hilton di Las Vegas che Elvis non sarà in grado di esibirsi a gennaio. Elvis manda un telegramma al Colonnello con queste parole “Caro Colonnello, apprezzo che lei stia firmando qualsiasi documento che mi riguarda, mentre io cerco di ristabilirmi. Auguro il meglio per tutti i ragazzi e per me. Felice anno nuovo, Elvis”
