La Chamber Of Commerci annuncia che Elvis è stato votato come UNO DEI DIECI UOMINI DI RILIEVO DEL 1970. Il Jaycee Award è un riconoscimento che, sin dal 1939, viene dato a uomini che si sono distinti in tutti i campi (inclusi Leonard Bernstein, Orson Welles, il Rev. Jesse Jackson e Ralph Nader), con un comune denominatore: Devono avere 35 anni o meno di 35 anni. Elvis era stato nominato dallo sceriffo Bill Morris, che lo unisce ad altri vincitori, tra cui la segretaria dell’ufficio stampa di Ronald Reagan, Ron Ziegler, Tom Atkins, un attivista dei diritti civili di Boston e un ricercatore dell’Università di Harvard. Elvis e Priscilla presenziano alla colazione del JCC, al Memphis Holiday di Riverport. Durante la conferenza stampa, Elvis risponde ad una domanda sugli effetti della musica nei giovani d’oggi e risponde “Non vado d’accordo con la musica che incita alle droghe e dissacra la bandiera. Io ritengo che un intrattenitore debba intrattenere e far felice la gente”. Tra gli altri, alla cerimonia è presente anche Marion Keisler, che fu assistente di Sam Phillips alla Sun Records. Verso le 5 del pomeriggio, Elvis dà un ricevimento a Graceland per i vincitori del premio e per i funzionari e come fuori programma fa fare a tutti un giro per la casa. Alle 20.00, Elvis e Priscilla offrono una cena ai 100 ospiti al Four Flames Restaurant, dove i segnaposto hanno stampato il logo TCB e sono autografati da Elvis. Durante la cena Elvis regala un orologio, a tutti gli altri premiati. Viene servita un’elegante cena Chateaubriand, dal costo totale di $ 1.907,51. L’intrattenimento è eseguito dal cantante e fisarmonicista Tony Barasso, insieme a due violinisti. Verso le 20, durante la cerimonia delle premiazioni all’Ellis Auditorium, è orgoglioso di accettare un riconoscimento per essere uno dei 10 uomini più significativi d’America. Questo award per lui è un onore, perché un riconoscimento pubblico rivolto più all’uomo che all’intrattenitore. “Signore e Signori - dice con una voce tremula ed emozionata – quando ero un bambino, ero un sognatore. Questo è l’unico premio che Elvis ha ritirato di persona e diventa uno dei suoi tesori più preziosi che porterà sè in ogni suo spostamento.

A Graceland viene installalo un sistema di sorveglianza, con telecamere piazzate ai cancelli e in molte stanze della casa. Queste convergono su quattro monitors, che alle volte Elvis va a vedere, come alternativa alla televisione e che in futuro, occasionalmente gli serviranno come sostituto del contatto umano.

Elvis lascia Las Vegas per tornare a Los Angeles

Elvis e Priscilla assistono al primo combattimento Ali-Frazier, all’Ellis Auditorium. Elvis indossa la cintura d’oro “trofeo” ricevuto in regalo dall’International ed è accompagnato da un numeroso gruppo di ragazzi e dallo sceriffo Bill Morris.
Più tardi Elvis va al Memphian (questa è la prima volta, da quando è tornato a casa) e guarda film per 4 ore.
Elvis scrive una lettera a Mr. Finlalor del Dipartimento di Giustizia degli Stati Uniti, esprimendo il suo interesse e ammirazione per il dipartimento, oltre alle sue convinzioni in merito ai problemi che sta attraversando il paese con la droga

Elvis arriva a Nashville, per una session nello studio B della RCA, mentre Priscilla va a Los Angeles per sovraintendere le ristrutturazioni nella loro nuova casa.
Sia il Colonnelllo che la RCA, nonché Felton Jarvis, sperano che Elvis faccia delle registrazioni della stessa splendida qualità di quelle dell’anno scorso, ma i problemi si presentano già da subito.
La RCA vuole vedere parecchi singoli, un album di musica gospel, uno di musica pop e, ancora più importante, dalla session deve uscire un nuovo album natalizio, ma sembra che Elvis, invece, abbia altre cose per la testa.
Parte subito con la canzone del cantante popolare scozzese Ewan McColl “The First Time I Ever Saw Your Face”, un brano che lui conosce nella versione del 1965 di Peter, Paul and Mary. Poi passa ad “Amazing Grace”, un brano del cantante popolare Judy Collins, che è stato tra le Top 20 e poi continua con altre due canzoni, di cui conosce la versione di Peter, Paul and Mary.
Elvis chiude la session all’1.30, prima di aver completato quello che dovrebbe essere l’ipotetico album “Elvis Presley, Folksinger”, perché lamenta un dolore agli occhi

Il Dr. Nick arriva in aereo da Memphis con l’oftalmologo, Dr. David Meyer, che presta ad Elvis le prime cure, in hotel. Poi lo fanno ricoverare al Nashvilles Baptist Hospital dove gli vengono diagnosticati irite e glaucoma di secondo grado.
L’attrice Barbara Leigh prende un volo dalla California per Nashville per stare con Elvis. In ospedale, riceve anche la visita del Governatore del Tennessee, Winfield Dunn.
Intanto in studio, in attesa del ritorno di Elvis, Felton Jarvis raccoglie il lavoro fatto sovra incidendo la parte dei coristi,

Mentre è a Memphis, Elvis contatta l’istruttore di karate coreano Kang Ree, che Ed Parker gli ha raccomandato per la sua esperienza nel Tae Kouw Do.
Elvis va nello studio di Kang Ree, sulla Popolar Avenue,, in prossimità di Overton Park e i due si mettono subito all’opera.
Oggi Elvis riceve la sua cintura nera di 4° grado.

Il Colonnello Parker conclude una nuova trattativa con la RCA, per la realizzazione di 3 album nel 1972, con l’etichetta Camden, da cui Elvis e il Colonnello riceveranno un anticipo di $90.000, e una più alta percentuale di royalties.
Il Colonnello, inoltre, accorda un secondo album Gold Award Hits, che, pur rinunciando alle royalties, garantisce comunque un incasso di $525.000 (da dividere 50-50 con Elvis) sui 150.000 pezzi venduti al prezzo di $3.50 cadauno.

Dopo essere tornato a Los Angeles, Elvis vola a Las Vegas con Joe Esposito, Charlie Hodge, James Caughley (che rimpiazza Richard Davis nell’entourage), Red West e Mike Keaton, mentre l’autista della limousine Gerald Peters (detto “Sir Gerald”) va in macchina, in modo tale da essere disponibile come autista durante il soggiorno di Elvis a Las Vegas.

Elvis va al Self-Realization Center a Pasadena, accompagnato da Sir Gerald, l’autista autorizzato da Elvis a guidare la sua limousine.
Va fatto notare che da quando Larry Geller è stato allontanato ed Elvis ha bruciato tutti o suoi libri di religione, subito dopo il matrimonio con Priscilla, quattro anni fa, Elvis non ha comunque mai abbandonato la sua ricerca spirituale, continuando ad esserne sempre più appassionato, tanto da riprendere i contatti con Sri Daya Mata. A seguito delle pressioni da parte della RCA che ha già comunicato la prossima uscita di un album natalizio e che continua a voler sempre nuovi singoli, Elvis torna a Nashville.
Per creare la giusta atmosfera, Felton Jarvis ha messo un albero di Natale, completo di decorazioni e di finti pacchettini appesi all’albero. Lamar appare vestito da Babbo Natale. Elvis a malincuore inizia con le registrazioni, ma è veramente coinvolto solo quando il gruppo inizia a suonare un blues classico di Charles Brown “Merry Christmas Baby”. Alle 4 del mattino, nonostante il suo malumore, Elvis riesce a completare quasi metà dell’album

Il punto massimo della serata si ha quando, durante la pausa tra “Winter Wonderland” e “O Come All Ye Faithful” Elvis e la band fanno una versione da 11 minuti della canzone di Bob Dylan “Don’t Think Twice, It’s All Right, dopo la quale, Elvis mostra una chiara mancanza di entusiasmo per il materiale natalizio che deve registrare.
Infatti Elvis se ne va e la band rimane per registrare le tracce strumentali

Nella terza serata di registrazione, l’attenzione di Elvis è rivolta prima di tutto al materiale della session di Marzo. Inizia subito con la canzone di Kris Kristofferson “Help Me Make Through The Night” per poi fare il brano del cantante di musica popolare Buffy Sainte-Marie “Until It’s Time For You To Go” e poi si dedica completamente alla parte gospel, motivo originale di questa session, per completare una traccia del classico “Lead Me, Guide Me”.
Poco dopo si interrompe la bella atmosfera, quando Elvis decide di fare una dimostrazione su come si può disarmare un uomo armato.
Con una mossa di karate, Elvis toglie di mano la pistola a Charlie Hodge e a Red West, facendola saltare nella chitarra Conde-Hermanos di Chip Young e questo guasta la session, definitivamente

Elvis registra altre tre canzoni, tra cui “He Touched Me” che diventerà il titolo dell’album

Dopo aver completato altri due spirituals, alle prime ore dell’alba, Elvis si rilassa al pianoforte accompagnato solo da Norbert Putnam al basso e canta due composizione del suo scrittore preferito, Ivoru Joe Hunter: “I’ll Be True” e “It’s Still Here” e un’altra canzone registrata da Hunter e che in parte gli ricorda la sua infanzia “I’ll Take You Home Again, Kathleen”.
Questi sono brani che, in seguito, verranno anche incisi, ma che in questa nottata sono stati la parte più luminosa della session

Dopo aver cantato una sola canzone pop, Elvis registra la sua parte vocale sulle tracce strumentali delle canzoni natalizie. Nonostante il contratto di Elvis prevede che è libero di lasciare qualora cambi la proprietà dell’Hotel, il Colonnello Parker provvede a confermare gli accordi presi a suo tempo con l’Hilton, anche ai nuovi proprietari, informando che verranno mantenute le stesse condizioni

Il Colonnello scrive al Management III per lamentare un management lassista ed “alcune esperienze negative” successe nell’ultimo tour. Dopo aver espresso una dose di scetticismo sulla prosecuzione dell’associazione (gli effetti di questa operazione potranno essere meglio valutati nel 1972), di fatto cede e concede alla società creata per le promozioni di supportare un’azione per un milione di dollari, per un altro tour con 12 date, che inizierà a novembre.

Il Los Angeles Citizen News riporta un articolo dal titolo “ELVIS PRESLEY SCARICA PARKER?” in relazione alle voci sempre più insistenti, secondo cui Parker sta cercando di vendere il suo contratto.
Contemporaneamente, la rivista musicale inglese New Musical Express riporta un articolo, secondo cui Parker sarebbe in contatto con Gordon Mills, il brillante manager di Tom Jones e tra i due ci sarebbe una fitta corrispondenza, argomento che viene smentito sia da Parker che dal suo assistente Tom Diskin, usando un linguaggio che farebbe invece pensare tutto il contrario e che queste supposizioni siano vere.
In questo periodo la stampa rivela che Elvis e Priscilla sono diventati come due estranei.

La ragazza disabile è talmente commossa da piangere continuamente durante tutto il breve incontro. Le sorelle vengono fatte sedere di fronte al palco, perché possano vedere bene lo show.
