Elvis continua a lavorare sul materiale che intende usare per i suoi show di Las Vegas, aiutato in modo particolare da Charlie Hodge, mentre Joe Esposito comunica i titoli delle canzoni al Colonnello Parker, per poter ottenere i diritti.

La Graceland Christian Church, il cui proprietà confina con Graceland, concede ad Elvis la possibilità di utilizzo del passaggio, per poter entrare ed uscire dall’Highway 51, evitando le folle di fans. Per contro, Elvis si impegna a pagare una tassa di $ 10 e si prende carico della pavimentazione della strada. Garantisce inoltre che non farà passare veicoli sulla strada durante le cerimonie domenicali, salvo situazioni di assoluta necessità.

Elvis parla con un’infinità di musicisti che conosce per poterli ingaggiare per gli spettacoli di Las Vegas.
Alla fine mette insieme una band composta dal chitarrista leader James Burton che a sua volta porta Larry Muhoberbach (prima Larry Owen) di Memphis, la cui band era presente al concerto di beneficenza di Elvis del 1961.
Muhoberbach, dal canto suo, suggerisce un batterista di Dallas, che si chiama Ronnie Tutt. Burton contatta anche il basso Jerry Scheff e la chitarra ritmica John Wilkinson (che già ha firmato un contratto con la RCA come solista).
Elvis contatta personalmente gli Imperials, per poter avere un quartetto gospel maschile, come back singers. Gli Imperials avevano già cantato con Elvis nella session per l’album How Great Thou Art, nel 1966.
Elvis chiama anche le Sweet Inspirations, un gruppo femminile di soul che ammira molto, anche se non ha mai conosciuto personalmente.
L’idea di Elvis che creare e portare sul palco degli spettacoli che contengano tutta la musica che lo ha influenzato.

Iniziano le prove degli shows agli RCA Studios sul Sunset Boulevard. 
In sei notti impareranno 150 canzoni.
Visto che finora non ha mai fatto uno show di un’ora, con Charlie Hodge, Elvis studia la tempistica dello spettacolo, andando avanti e indietro sulle canzoni
Nel frattempo, già da settimane, il Colonnello Parker ha iniziato la preparazione di tutto l’advertising utile a promuove il ritorno di Elvis ai concerti live

L’album “From Elvis In Memphis” è al 13° posto nella classifica US, mentre la canzone “Flaming Star” è al 2° posto nella classifica UK

Su suo invito, Elvis e i ragazzi assistono ad uno degli shows di Barbra Streisand.
Elvis dice a Charlie Hodge che lo show sembra molto “un grande palco ancora da riempire” e che il suo non sarà così, perché non sarà solo sul palco, ma nel suo show ci saranno anche i coristi e una band.

Per due giorni, nella show room dell’International, ci sono le prove con i 30 elementi dell’orchestra
Il Colonnello Parker continua con l’organizzazione della campagna pubblicitaria, facendo preparare spille, palloncini, posters, calendari, foto, ecc, e contemporaneamente organizza un vero e proprio martellamento alle radio e alle televisioni.
Parker dice ad Elvis “Anche i cammelli del deserto sapranno che sei qui e chiunque in città saprà che Elvis sta arrivando, ma tu se l’unico che può portarli qui”

Durante la giornata, Elvis si è svolta l’ultima prova generale dello show con l’orchestra, la band e i back singers ripetendo due volte l’intero concerto di apertura,.
Il pubblico presente è tutto su invito e tra gli invitati ci sono Cary Grant, Fats Domino, Pat Boone, Carol Channing, Sam Phillips (invitato personalmente da Elvis) oltre che un gran numero di componenti della stampa che il Colonnello ha mandato a prendere con il jet privato di Kirk Kerkorian.
Lo show viene aperto dalle Sweet Insipiration alle 20.15, mentre, nel backstage, Elvis è bloccato da un tremendo attacco di panico che non gli permette di salire sul palco fino alle 22.15.
Arrivato sul palco, Elvis esita un momento e poi parte con lo show.
La risposta dello show è sensazionale e il pubblico di celebrità rimane praticamente in piedi per tutto lo show applaudendolo.
Dopo il concerto, Elvis tiene una conferenza stampa nella sala riunioni dell’hotel
Nel frattempo, nel coffe shop dell’hotel, Parker, su un tovagliolo rosa, conclude la trattativa per un nuovo contratto, che verrà formalizzato ufficialmente nei prossimi giorni.
Il nuovo contratto prevede un compenso per Elvis di $ 125.000 a settimana e l’estensione dell’impegno dell’International Hotel ai prossimi 5 anni, con due ingaggi all’anno.
Questo garantisce ad Elvis $ 1.000.000 all’anno per un lavoro di solo 8 settimane, fino al 1974, anche se sono a suo carico tutte le spese correlate ai suoi spettacoli.

Elvis dopo aver cantato Runaway, presenta Dell Shannon.
Nel Midnight show, registrato dalla RCA, Elvis non riesce a smettere di ridere durante l’esecuzione di “Are You Lonesome Tonight”, in cui invece di cantare “Fissi la soglia della porta e ti immagini di vedermi” dice “Fissi la tua parrucca e vorresti avere i capelli”
Secondo quanto racconta Red West la sua ilarità è determinata dal fatto che uno spettatore del pubblico ha perso il suo parrucchino ed impazzisce per trovarlo tra i piedi dei presenti. Secondo Charlie Hodge, invece, con questa frase improvvisata il pubblico, i coristi, i musicisti scoppiano a ridere ed Elvis, anche immaginando la scena, si fa trascinare dall’ilarità di tutti fino al punto di non riuscire a controllarsi. Oltrettutto, avendo Elvis una risata coinvolgente, più rideva lui, più ridevano gli altri. La performance termina con Elvis che dice “Con questa canzone sono andati sprecati 14 anni”

Elvis e Priscilla assistono alla serata di apertura di Nancy Sinatra, all’International, insieme al Colonnello, tutto lo staff, la gang e le rispettive mogli. Dopo lo show tutti vanno ad un party offerto da Frank Sinatra.

Elvis ha terminato il suo ingaggio a Las Vegas con un risultato di 101.550 ascoltatori venuti a vedere i suoi spettacoli e un incasso lordo di $ 1.522, 325.
La scorsa primavera Dean Martin aveva fatto un pubblico totale di solo 50.000 persone. Alex Shoofey, Vice Presidente dell’International Hotel, si congratula con Elvis per il suo successo e regala una vacanza completa alle Hawaii, sia per lui che per altre 8 persone, spesati di tutto

Elvis è tornato a Los Angeles, e per la prima volta in 10 anni, Elvis non ha né film né registrazioni da fare. Infatti in agenda, Elvis non ha alcun impegno fino a gennaio del 1970, quando inizierà il suo ingaggio a Las Vegas e nei prossimi 3 mesi Elvis passerà il suo tempo vivendo nelle sue diverse case nei suoi luoghi di vacanza preferiti.

Elvis torna a Los Angeles, prima di volare nuovamente a Palm Springs dove rimarrà una settimana.

Elvis torna a casa a Memphis in aereo, arrivando al mattino molto presto. Rimarrà a Memphis fino il 5 ottobre, tranne che per un breve viaggio a Nashville e Dallas.

Elvis vola a Nashville con Charlie Hodge per sovra incidere molte canzoni con la sua voce.

Elvis è allo Studio B della RCA di Nashville, dove registra la parte vocale di “Let us Pray”.

Ancora una volta Elvis va al Memphian Theater per vedere "Midnight Cowboys". 
Nonostante rimanga a casa per un periodo, Elvis non appare molto spesso ai cancelli di Graceland per salutare i fans.

Elvis vola a Dallas e ritorna il giorno dopo

Elvis vola a Los Angeles e poi prosegue per le Hawaii, insieme a Priscilla, suo padre e la sua matrigna (Dee) e gli Esposito, I Gambills e gli Schillings alcuni amici, per una vacanza che è pagata prevalentemente dall’International Hotel.
Mentre sono alle Hawaii, programmano di fare un giro in Europa, ma il Colonnello fa notare che se lo facesse i fans europei si sentirebbero offesi nel vederlo come turista, senza essersi esibito. A questo punto l’idea viene abbandonata.






12-10-1969
Elvis e Priscilla, Vernon e Dee, gli Esposito, i Gambills e gli Schillings tornano a Los Angeles. Il gruppo era partito con l’intenzione di fare una vacanza in Europa, Ognuno di loro voleva andare in Europa e coloro che non avevano il passaporto hanno fatto in modo di farsene uno. Tuttavia il Colonnello li convince che i fans europei di Elvis non avrebbero mai accettato che Elvis ci andasse solo come turista e non come performer. Così hanno cambiato i loro piani e il gruppo è andato alle Bahamas.

Durante le prove del pomeriggio e durante il Dinner Show, Felton Jarvis testa una nuova attrezzatura per la registrazione del Midnight Show.
Queste saranno le primissime registrazioni dal vivo di Elvis con la sua nuova band.

22-10-1969
Elvis e Priscilla, insieme agli Esposito e gli Schilling, nonostante il loro programma di andare in Europa, volano a Miami e poi proseguono per le Bahamas. Alloggiano al Paradise Island, ma sono costretti a stare in albergo per la maggior parte del soggiorno, a causa di un uragano e anticipano il rientro.





30-10-1969 
Elvis vola a Los Angeles. Viene intercettato dalla giornalista di gossip Rona Barrett, al tavolo del blackjack affiancato da due donne. Nel suo articolo, Rona scrive: “Tutti stanno commentando quanto Elvis Presley stia bene, mentre si diverte all’International Hotel”
La risposta di Elvis è: “Questo è quanto un cattivo matrimonio fa per te”

31-10-1969
Il Colonnello firma una trattativa con la RCA secondo cui la casa discografica pagherà $ 20.000 per due singoli extra, “Suspicious Mind “ e “Dont’ Cry Daddy” e per il doppio album “From Vegas to Memphis/From Memphis to Vegas” .
Per tutte le trattative speciali il guadagno viene diviso al 50 e 50.
