Happy New Year From Pontiac 1975

Il concerto di Pontiac, MI batte tutti i records di incasso. Sono stati venduti tutti i 60.000 posti, dando vita il più grande pubblico che un solista abbia mai avuto per un suo concerto. Lo show fa incassare oltre $800.000, che risulta essere la più grossa somma mai guadagnata da un artista solista, in un’unica serata. Però lo show non è esente da problemi. Infatti Elvis riceve una minaccia di morte ed è necessario munirsi di alta sicurezza. Durante lo spettacolo, non succede niente, pur se viene arrestato un uomo in possesso di una pistola. Comunque il concerto non è un gran trionfo. Fa molto freddo, la qualità del suono è piuttosto scadente e questo crea grande sconforto ai musicisti. Come se non bastasse, all’inizio dello spettacolo i pantaloni di Elvis si strappano e, a detta di tutti, Elvis non è al massimo della forma.

Nonostante tutti questi problemi, Elvis e il Colonnello si portano a casa oltre $300.000 da dividere tra loro, dopo aver detratto le spese.

Dopo lo spettacolo Elvis e il suo entourage, oltre a Lisa Marie, Vernon, Linda Thompson, T.G. Sheppard e sua moglie, tornano a Memphis con il Lisa Marie, per celebrare l’arrivo del nuovo anno nella camera di Elvis, guardando vecchie cassette degli spettacoli "Monty Python".

Preso dall’impeto del momento, Elvis decide di andare in Colorado per fare una vacanza, con Linda e altre 17 persone. Dopo aver fatto il check-in in un hotel di Denver, Elvis spedisce a Vail Joe Esposito, Jerry Kennedy, un ufficiale della polizia di Denver e Ron Pietrafeso, affinché trovino case e alloggi da affittare sufficienti per tutti

Elvis trascorre il suo 41° compleanno, in una casa che ha affittato alle pendici di Vail, Colorado, con Jerry Schilling e Myrna Smith, che già da un anno vivono assieme e forse si sposeranno. E’ una vacanza ricca di tensioni, prevalentemente dovute ai continui ed oscillanti sbalzi d’ umore di Elvis. Tutti si sono ritirati nei loro appartamenti e sono piuttosto arrabbiati. Elvis si trova praticamente da solo, anche perché non si sente bene. Alla fine Linda chiama Jerry e Myrna, dicendo loro che non c’è nessuno con Elvis. Lui è piuttosto a terra e lei ha preparato una torta. Quando Myrna e Jerry arrivano Elvis solleva a malapena la testa. Quando però, i suoi amici si siedono attorno al tavolo ed iniziano a chiacchierare, Elvis chiede a Myrna se ha mai visto “Across 110th Street” uno dei suoi film preferiti degli ultimi tempi, interpretato da Yaphet Kotto ed Antony Quinn. Myrna risponde di no e questa scoperta è il risveglio di Elvis che inizia a raccontare il film e a recitarne ogni dialogo, cosa che si dilunga fino alle prime ore del mattino.

Nel frattempo, gli altri ragazzi con le rispettive mogli e ragazze stanno prendendo lezioni di sci e, quella sera, dopo aver affittato una motoslitta, per un momento, Elvis compare sui pendii, quel tanto per provocare le ire di Susan Ford, (figlia del futuro presidente degli Stati Uniti), che lo rimprovera di non rispettare i regolamenti locali e far scrivere, nel numero del 10 febbraio dal National Enquirer il titolo “Questo è Elvis, il NIGHTSTALKER”(Elvis avanza furtivamente nella notte), corredato da varie illustrazioni e foto.

Su invito di Elvis, il Dr. Nick parte per Denver, con la sua famiglia per poi, il giorno dopo, proseguire per Memphis. Il Dr. Nick tornerà in Colorado giovedì 15 gennaio, mentre suo figlio rimarrà, perchè è diventato un nuovo componente della corte.

Come gesto di ringraziamento ai ragazzi che sono in carico, Elvis regala 2 Lincolns e una cadillac a Jerry Kennedy, Ron Pietraseo e a Gerald Starkey, oltre a una cadillac per Linda e una per la fidanzata di Joe, Shirley Dieu. La fattura è di $70.000

Parlando della generosità di Elvis nei confronti dei suoi amici poliziotti, il giornalista televisivo di Denver, Don Kinney, scherza in diretta dicendo che anche a lui piacerebbe avere una macchina. Elvis gli compra una Seville.

Nel frattempo la vacanza è degenerata in amare fratture, per liti interne, nel corso delle quali Jerry Schilling se ne va, per il quieto vivere, dicendo ad Elvis che l’amicizia è più importante del posto di lavoro

Da oggi decorre il nuovo accordo tra Elvis è il Colonnello della divisione al 50-50, su tutti i concerti live, che dice “Con il presente le parti concordano che questi (tours) sono una joint venture e che Elvis Presley è responsabile delle sue  esibisceances, mentre il Col. Tom Parker e i suoi rappresentanti, sono responsabili per l’advertising e la promozione dello show…… Questo accordo e autorizzazione avrà una durata di sette anni, con decorrenza 22 gennaio 1976

Elvis è tornato a Memphis per una session di registrazione speciale che si terrà a Graceland. Poiché, già da marzo, né Travis né il Colonnello sono in grado di attirare Elvis in uno studio di registrazione, Jarvis ha organizzato di portare a Graceland un impianto mobile della RCA, con un camion rosso. Dopo essere stati spostati tutti i mobili in stile polinesiano, i cavi elettrici vengono portati nella stanza passando attraverso la cucina. Questa stanza diventerà famosa come la Jungle Room.

28-01-1976

Oggi dovrebbe aver inizio la session di registrazione, ma viene rimandata perché Elvis è stato chiamato fuori città per essere presenta al funerale dell’ufficiale di polizia di Denver, Eugene Kennedy, fratello del Capitano Jerry Kennedy. Elvis organizza affinché JD Sumner e gli Stamps cantino al funerale e presenzia alla cerimonia indossando un’uniforme di capitano di polizia fatta su misura.

Elvis passa la giornata a Graceland giocando a biliardo nella Jungle room con due poliziotti di Denver: il capitano Jerry Kennedy e Ron Pietrafeso. Verso mezzanotte, con il Lisa Marie volano a Denver per i Fool’s Gold Loafs

Inizia la session di registrazione programmata a Graceland, con grandi speranze che nell’ ambiente familiare di casa sua, Elvis sia in grado di produrre qualcosa. Nonostante la band sia composta dagli stessi musicisti che sono sempre on stage con lui, Elvis non la vive in questo modo, ma si presenta vestito con la sua uniforme di poliziotto ed è evidente che la sua mente è concentrata su tutto fuorché la session e quando riesce a farlo so focalizza quasi sempre su materiale triste. Riescono comunque a fare 3 master, lavorando dalle 20.00 alle 9.30 del mattino successivo ed Elvis registra Bitter They Are Harder They Fall, She Thinks I Still Care e The Last Farewell

La session va avanti dalle 21.00 alle 10.30 del mattino dopo e viene registrata solo “Solitarie", una canzone di Neil Sedaka. Infatti Elvis è sempre distratto e ogni tanto si ritira in camera sua (dove complotta con Red e Sonny West su come combattere i trafficanti di droga a Memphis), per poi tornare alla session con uno spirito al limite della paranoia.

La session continua con lo stesso spirito di ieri e si registrano solo altre due canzoni e più esattamente la nuova canzone di Mark James, “Moody Blue”, il futuro singolo e "Never Fall In Love Again.

05-02-1976

Dalle 21 del giovedì sera, fino alle 14 del venerdì, la session è caratterizzata da molte partenze ed arresti. Non c’è alcun dubbio, però, che Elvis si impegni molto con l’ultima canzone di Tennis Linde “For The Heart” ed esegue  “Hurt”, il successo di Roy Hamilton del 1954, in una performance piena di pathos.

Poiché la session di ieri si è prolungata fino alle 14, quella di oggi non inizia prima di mezzanotte, se pur in 8 ore vengono completate solo due canzoni Never Again e Love Coming Down.

James Burton, Jerry Scheff e Glen D. Hardin sono costretti a lasciare, a causa di impegni presi precedentemente, ma che non avrebbero interferito con il loro impegno se le sessions precedenti non fossero state rinviate. Vengono sostituiti da musicisti di Nashville Billy Sanford, Bobby Emmons e Norbert Putman. Oggi la session inizia a mezzanotte, ma se ne fa poco, se non una versione in studio di “American The Beautiful” e solo un master del successo del 1975 di Willie Nelson “Blue Eyes Cryin In The Rain”

I musicisti arrivano e aspettano, ma Elvis non si fa vedere e questo segna la fine della prima session ufficiale di Elvis a Graceland. Tuttavia è stata una settimana difficile per tutti. Per un album da 10 brani, un singolo ed un secondo singolo che verrà preso dall’album, Felton Jarvis è in grado di consegnare alla RCA solo 12 master

Elvis, T. Michael McMahona, Joe Esposito e il Dr. Nick prendono accordi per la creazione di una catena di campi da volano sparsi nel paese, che si chiameranno Presley Center Courts.

Elvis è andato in Colorado, con l’intenzione di acquistare una casa per le vacanze, ma torna a Memphis quasi subito, dopo che i suoi poliziotti di Denver cercano di parlargli in merito al suo comportamento stravagante sempre più frequente.

Il chitarrista James Burton e il batterista Ronnie Tutt hanno comunicato che anche loro vogliono andarsene e Tutt viene rimpiazzato dal batterista di Nashville, Larrie Londin, mentre, alla fine, James Burton decide di rimanere.

Con questo concerto Elvis apre un tour di 11 giorni con un compenso di $ 315.000 per fare aggiungere uno show alle 22 nei fine settimana, quindi il venerdì e il sabato dovrà fare due concerti a sera.

Durante questo concerto, John O’ Grady, l’investigatore privato con cui Elvis ha rapporti sin dal 1970, va a trovare Elvis e racconta “Mi sono sentito così preoccupato per lui, che ho pianto. Era grasso. Aveva dei blocchi motori che non gli permettevano di camminare…. Ho veramente pensato che stesse per morire”.

A seguito di questa esperienza O’ Grady e il legale di Elvis a Los Angeles, Ed Hookstratten, discuteranno la possibilità di far entrare Elvis in un programma di disintossicazione presso la Scripps Clinic di San Diego, ma la cosa non ha mai avuto un seguito.
